Hey Everyone ,
I have a small colony of rats and mice.about 100 plus i just bought 6 more breeder rat a month ago .All animals are housed in 10 an 20 gallon tanks today i noticed that there are little white (very Small) bugs all over the inside an the outside of the tanks.i have no idea what this could be or how to treat but any help would be great. For bedding i have been using carefresh bedding for over a year now with no problems .what could these things be? Mites are dark colored aren't they?
Thanx All
George

Are your animals itching? Are the bugs long or round? You may have lice. If your animals are itching, hair loss and the bugs are long(rice shaped) them I would say that you have lice. But (hopefully), it is some type of wood lice or the like.

I would separate all the cages that have the little white insects so they don't spread to the other cages. Most likely they came from the rats, as they are the newest animals in the collection. Without a picture, very difficult to know what these things are. Taking a few samples to a vet may help identify them as well. Just press a couple betwen to sheets of clear plastic or glass.

I would get some Ovitrol Plus spray from the vet and use it on bedding and then change them into the treated bedding. I would wipe down around the cages etc.
