breeding croc monitors

wolsniw Nov 01, 2004 11:41 PM

I have a five foot (head to tail) ?female? crocodile monitor and i was wondering if any one knew how big they had the be to breed. Also do males need to be larger than females. I've read that 1 3/4 feet SVL is large enough for female. Is there any way to sex them accuratly at this size.

This is my first message so sorry if it is redundant.

Do a search for Rope and JPshadows they have posted many pics of male and female crocs.

Scott...first i have to say that i am no expert on breeding crocs or for that matter no expert on breeding anything but humans....i do have some experience though(with trying)...and i do have a pair that i think will do alright in the future...all that said theres a lot to going on...as Frank has said before it seems to be a lot easier to get a pair while they are still babies...raise them together... more difficult to to get one from here or there..also as the monitors get older it gets tough...so for someone with no experience keeping them i just don't know...we can only hope all the conditions are adequate...also.. the size of the croc may not be a indication of age....soooooooooo good luck.....billy

Hi Billy,
I was using you and Jody as a reference on sexing.
Nobody is an expert in my opinion. Monitors are like women, we'll never figure them out, just try to keep them happy.
I have been married long enough to figure that part out. Hahaha
I have faith in you, it won't be long before you're posting pics of fertile eggs then babies.

And know, I am no expert on Croc monitors, but I did keep expert monitors, hahahahahahahaha. I believe that is the very point of being "expert", to allow the monitors to do what they are designed to do.

Now please remember, monitors in nature of the same species respond to many many things differently. An example is, individuals from different extremes of their range. Therefore its expected that in captivity they may repond to a different range of conditions than in nature. But its still allowing them to do what is natural and what they are designed to do. Just a thought. FR

Frank, I have seen that photo many times now and i have wondered a couple things (take this lightly), why is there a piece of wood in there? also, it almost looks like there is another foot in the pic?

at any rate beautiful monitor

I think its a leaf. And heck if I know why its there, it just is.

Yea, I only have a couple of croc hatching or hatchling pics loaded on KS. And I am to lazy to load more, as I no longer breed croc monitors, for the time being, I do not feel the necessity to load more. Cheers FR

Learn how to sex them before attempting to breed them.
They can breed whenever they are ready to breed. I cannot simply put an exact time, size, minute on when yours will breed.

If your conditions are not right it won't matter what size she is. You have to first support them enough so they can cycle and reproduce.

I would learn more and get yourself more educated on them before attemtping to breed, especially breeding of croc monitors.
