Cage set advice for leopard geckos....

icedearthgoddess Nov 02, 2004 12:03 AM

I thought of a question that I have never really seen before... don't know if I ever really looked for it, but anyway... When setting up a tank for leos, should the hides (wet & dry) be placed on the warmer side or cooler side of the tank. Example: if I set up the "left" side with the light on top of the screen, should I place both of the hides on the cool side, or should I place one on the cool, one on the warm? Or should I keep both on warm? ( Many other combos...) please, any advice would be great!!! Thanks again for all the other help everyone has given!!!

Best is to provide a humid and dry on hot, and dry on cool. Just don't put the humid on the cool side, it wont be comfortable. My geckos little humid feels like a sauna inside, 92F and moist. He likes it that way I guess because I never saw him use the dry.

I have a 15 gallon so I am not sure if you have enough room in your cage to do what I did.

First I added a 2nd level which allowed me to increase the number of hides to 2 more.

Anyways, I have one large cool hide. That is the big rock on the bottom floor. The substrate is tile to it stays nice and cool.
On the right side of the bottom cage there is a humid hide and behind that, under the shade of the 2nd level is a warm dry hide. It's not an extremely warm dry hide because it is under the 2nd level, but it is warmer than the rock hide.

On the 2nd level there is the very warm dry hide (coconut to the left) and another humid hide (if they want it really humid)

This gives my geckos 5 places that they can choose their temp. Tile helps absorb heat and also stays very cool. I'd reccomend a similar set up because I see my geckos use all of the hides

aw thank you
one more suggestion that someone made to me
my humid hides have a clear top, so if your has the same, cover the clear part with duct tape or something. my leos haven't been interested in the humid hides mostly because too much light was shinning in during the day.

my tank was very easy to set up. the tiles were 88 cents each, a total of 11 bucks. The wood platform was easy too (which makes the 2nd level). and the logs are from oregon from when I was last out there. you can easily use some logs from the petstore. i am very interested in seeing how your cage turns out. Please keep me posted or message me so I can see your progress, and feel free to email me if you want help

I will definatly keep you posted... I want to have the cage all set up and ready for my geckos when I get them in December... I am planning on going to the Show in Pomona and picking them up there... One question... how many do you have house together? I am debating on whether or not I want to make two seperate cages or one larger one... It is said that they like to live alone. What are your thoughts on this?

I have two females and they sleep (tangled ) together. It's really cute.

I think most animals like a little bit of company as long as they are not in competition (plenty of food, water, warmth, ect.) I have a 15 gallon, but since i have the 2nd story it's equivalent to a 20. Rule of thumb is 10 gallons per gecko

Well, alrightly then Thanks again for all the help!
