And now for something completely different...

Hello to all you ratsnake freaks out there. Here's a picture of my pride and glory 6 foot adult male Pantherophis bairdi. It originated from Banderas County (Texas), a locality well known in herpetocultural society for it's colourful Baird's Ratsnakes.

Greetings,

Herman Bronsgeest, The Netherlands.

That's a big Texas Bairdi. I've seen several this year that are 6 feet. Very nice colors on him. Is he doing any breeding Herman? Here's a pic of one of the females in my collection on loan from Kelli Hammack.

Thanx. Actually I already bred this guy twice this year to the specimen shown in the message above. A friend of mine imported the couple as a nice addition to his own collection, but then his Honduran Milksnakes began to 'swarm' and he decided to sell them to me. About half an hour after releasing the snakes into the terrarium I saw them copulating. I was a little bit worried at the time, since I was told that the female already had produced a clutch earlier this year in the USA, and she did look a bit emaciated. After a few days, I found out that she was pregnant already, and just a month later she produced 9 good eggs, all of wich have hatched. Two months later she gave me another clutch of 5 good eggs and, believe it or not, all of these have hatched too. Surprisingly, the juveniles were quite large compared to guttata's or obsoleta's of the same age, about twice the weight or so. Needless to say, they sold even better than sex. The female has recovered completely, and she looks quite healthy and well fed right now. After this triple clutch adventure, something I do not advocate and do not wish to try again, I guess she must have very good genetics.

Nice bairdi, by the way. On the reptile exchange 3th oktober in Houten, The Netherlands, I purchased a female specimen quite similar to yours from a guy from Belgium. I just can't wait to breed her to my hypomelanistic male, also a metallic specimen.

Greetings,

Herman Bronsgeest, The Netherlands.

I have a pair of bairdi that were bred from parents that came from bandera county, I will try to get a good picture of them to post on here next week. The male is fairly similar to that one (although smaller, they're only 2 and a half years old) but the female has much richer colour, some places almost brick red. I think after seeing lots of bairdi that the bandera county animals are some of the best.
