Breeding rats

bigdee Nov 02, 2004 10:27 AM

I have 2 cat litter pans with about 4 rats each I also have a empty 20L tank that im scared to use, when I was using the aqariums I always came im my room to find rats all over the place because they chewed threw the screen. There is a window in my room that does not leat to outside it leads to area which is under the front porch which is dark and damp. I kept my rats under there and wondered why i only got baby rats only once in a while, well about month ago i took them out and put them in the room itself and now it must be like 3 litters and 1-2 on the way. My question is how do you breed the rats without them overpopulating? Do you keep males and female seperate? Also i now notice that the room smells in less then a week after cleaning

Separating the males from the females while the females are still pregnant certainly will stop production. When I was breeding mice for snake food, I sold the excess to other snake owners in the area. Weaned rats I sold to a place that bought all kinds of rats and mice from breeders to sell to petstores, schools etc. So for me, worrying about over population wasn't a problem.

The good thing about rats you can have two colonies of females and one male, just rotate the male into each group of females as you need.
