Picture of the Malagasy Giant !!!!

Lyn Nov 02, 2004 03:25 PM

Hi again, I have a photo of the Malagasy Giant Hognose that I'm getting. Oh Boy am I excited now. I mean, I was already excited, but this snake is just awesome!!! I'll be on pins and needles till I get him home. I can see he will indeed need a very large enclosure. He's bigger than I had pictured in my mind.

Looks to be good size, about the same as mine (59". I'll be curious to see if the blonde is dominant on his back or if the black is. I've seen quite a few now, and the blonde "seems" to be more dominant on most, especially the larger (older) ones. Either way that's a great looking snake. If you were looking for an active dirunal snake, you've found it.

Here's a pic of mine when he was 52".

Yours is gorgeous too! I was told that mine is about 5 feet and I read they can get up to 6 feet. Not sure if mine is full grown or still growing. They had him listed as Long Term Captive so I guess that means he might be old enough to be full grown at the 5 foot mark. I'm bumming a bit cuz I found out I probably won't get him till the 2nd week in December. That seems an awefully long time away. I'm going to take advantage of it and try to get his cage built. I was going to keep him in a tub temporarily, but if I can get the cage built by then, I won't have to use the tub. I should get him on either the 9th or 10th of December. I am also getting a Northern Water which I'm happy about because I'm trying to get a collection of "local" species for use on the public demos I do. I figure it will be nice to show people animals they might actually see around here. So far I have the Eastern Milks, Smooth Greens, and the Toad. Finding a tame Garter will be a bit of a challenge, but is on my list. The Northern Water is a beauty and is very calm for a Water. Again, not an easy thing to find. I will of course post pics of the Hog when he finally gets here, and of his enclosure once I get it built.

This is the Northern Water...

I see you have a Jungle Carpet. I have a Jungle/Coastal cross named Bear. He's about 7 feet long and weighs somewhere around 10 pounds. Lucky for me he has an excellent temperament.

That's going to be a tough wait!

Nice looking water and jungle x coastal. Check out my photo page for a nice looking northern water I came across last year. Not a nice temperament though!

My Mad hog is still growing about 2" a month. I'm thinking he has a ways to go. I've read they can get 7-8ft. There's not alot of info on them, so I'll just wait and see.

Good luck!

I like your photo. Cool pose on the snake.

I've taken several photos of wild Northerns in a Nature Preserve where I volunteer. But none so nice. I look forward to having my Northern and being able to get good photos. Being Secretary of our Herp Club I get tons of emails "can you identify this snake" which is easy since we don't have very many species locally. I'd like to have a section on my website devoted to all of the local snakes in the area with several photos, so I can direct them there rather than trying to send tons of pics through the email. I would sure love to add your Northern pic to that page once I make it, if that's ok by you.

I just designed some new home made enclosures to accomodate the Giant Hog, and my Carpet Python who could really use a larger enclosure. His is OK but I like big enclosures. The new enclosures will be either 7 feet long by 2 feet front to back (14 sq feet floorspace) or 5 feet long by 3 feet front to back (15 sq feet floorspace). Trying to decide which is better.

The setup will allow me to actually have 3 of these enclosures stacked (really making it one unit with solid back and solid walls, but will have 3 separate enclosures in it if that makes sense)

Soooooooo, I picked out another snake to add to my "Christmas gift to myself" LOL...

Aint she a Beaut (litterally)

Pretty soon I'm gonna run out of room in my sig line. Guess then I'll have to stop! Easier said than done. There are just so many amazing animals out there. I love all my pets very much. I love the variety, many of them are rescues so I feel good they are being cared for. Some are just presents to myself

Your welcome to use my northern pic.

I figure when I run out of space, I'll start stacking everything which may necessitate new enclosures for some. Of course there always seems to be room for "just one more"

When I bought my Carpet Python, he was going to be my ONLY snake. Yup. Just one. Husband had forbid me to buy a snake. Learned his lesson when I brought home a 7 foot long Python. He's since forbidden me multiple times to get more animals. As you can see I don't take kindly to that, and at this point he's just plumb given up. Pretty much every time I get a new animal I say to myself, that's it, no more. I'm out of room now. But somehow, as you've said, you can always find more room! Maybe after I get these 3 snakes, and the Oustalet's Chameleon, THEN I'll be done??? From the looks of your sig, I'd say you have some room left there for some more additions
