feeding pre-killed mice

ta2edskin Nov 02, 2004 05:38 PM

I just started to feed pre-killed mice to my tegu and I was wondering will she start to swallow it with out wiping it all around? I dont mind watching her do it but when she does it she gets mulch on it,usally she will get the mulch off before she swallows it, but I just don`t want to take the chance of her swallowing some. How often should I feed her a mouse? She is about 4 months old I have been feeding her a mouse one day then some chicken and fruit the next. Thanks Steve

An easy remedy to this is to feed your Tegu in a different container/location. I used to feed mine in a large rubbermaid container but have since gotten lazy and feed them in their enclosures. Like monitors, if your husbandy is correct, they shouldn't have any problems with a little ingested substrate. I'm sure their food isn't all that clean in the wild.

Don't worry about the substrate. As long as you are using a proper substrate your Tegu will be able to eat the food and not the substrate. If the Tegu does eat some of the substrate it will push it up afterwards. I have seen this done when oneof my Tegus swallowed a little piece of wood while eating a rat pup.
