as far as the weights of the spinies go, when i first got my adults they were eating well and in good shape and the vet weighed them at 15 grams each. they have all put on a bit of weight, but i think part of that is due to the fact they have been ready to breed but the male has not been in the mood.
as far as high end uroplatus i think we've concluded that there really is no such thing. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. although i do admit sometimes i see leaf tails that are quite striking. i would only consider one of the rarer species as high-end because they're rare and mroe expensive. guentheri is the only species i would consider "high end" of any sort, of anything that is somewhat available in the trade.
prices. hmmm.... well i've paid as low as $200 for a pair at a reptile show, which i thought was quite a steal! my other female i bought for $150 plus shipping, but it was from russ gurley so i wasnt worried about paying that. recently i've seen them go for as much as $225 plus shipping or so. but thats all WC individuals. for CB, the only ones ive seen offered were from neil meister, and i think they went for $300 a piece? correct me if im wrong, but i think you can still find an ad of his in the classifieds on uroplatus.net.
phantasticus have been very hard to come upon in the past few months. the whole genus was recently put on cites appendix II. i've been looking for a few months now, so when i saw the ad on the classifieds here i jumped on it. xtremereptiles.com has real cheap ones but you gotta talk to them about the availability. you can get on their mailing list. also, i've been looking for a male spiny leaf tail and came across a female someone pointed out to me from LLLReptile. they usually have banners for them above. so the classifieds are your best bet for finding them, otherwise try your luck googling pet stores that just happen to carry them. i think you're just going to find it harder to find them now. i just hope i get mine breeding before you cant get them anymore
Shipments of WC animals from Africa do not come in with a lot of regularity during the summer months(usually none at all). Madagascar in particular doesnt come in at all until about November - March. THis is because of the condition of the animals during that season being very poor, they wait until the rainy season to collect them while they are fat, active, reproducing and in better shape (which is why most imported females are gravid). THe scarcity in the last few months is not special, that happens every year, with almost every Madagascan and African shipment. Uroplatus being put on CITES has nothing at all to do with this, and until they set quotas or some other reguatory parameter, nothing has changed.
I have seen so many people trying to capitalize on this "Get yours now, they are going to be cut off soon by CITES!" for double the normal price, which is just ridiculous. As of right now, nothing has changed, and there has been nothing proposed as far as I know to change anything. This merely allows CITES to put an export quota on them for the time being. Appendix I is the classification you have to worry about.
The wet season has begun and the shipments are coming in again, same as always. Its the same with the other African animals, like chameleons, you couldnt find anything WC until 2 weeks ago, and now tha market is flooded with them.
Point being, watch for them to start increasing in availability from now until late winter, and if you are in the market, now is the time to buy, as the timeframe they are available is limited.
