My new "harvest" corn

leslieg123 Nov 02, 2004 11:05 PM

I'm not sure how this happened. I never intended to get a snake. Really. I'm not a snake person. I'll confess to being fascinated by them ... especially the Gibbon Viper at the Fort Worth Zoo. And I hate it when people kill snakes -- I go out of my way to rescue snakes and educate people about non-poisonous snakes. Maybe I'm more snake-y than I knew. But still, I never planned to purchase one. All that research I did about snakes ... that was just curiosity. Then I made the mistake of holding a baby corn snake. And ... well ... now I have this snake, you see. Isn't he gorgeous.

(not quite ready to show his face)

without a flash

So far he's been a model captive. Eating like a charm, pooping regularly (whenver I hold him), seems happy enough. I got him from Exotics by Nature - those guys are great. He's a harvest corn morph, and he's terrific so far.

So here's to a long and happy future together, me and mister snake. (I'm still not sure how this happened.)

Congrats on your first snake! Warning, however...corns and rats are very addicive snakes. I started out with one, now I've got 5. I have looked at all differnet forums, this seems to have the most knowledgeable people on it, we're all willing to help. Post a pic of your setup! If you got any specific questions feel free to ask!

Also - you mention that he poops every time you handle him. How often do you let him rest after you feed him? If you give him a good 48 hours after handling him, he should do his business in his cage and you won't need to worry about it

Good luck!
-Chris

I handle him for 15-30 minutes daily (sometimes twice daily), except the day after he eats. (I've had him 2.5 weeks.) I've been giving him 24 hours to digest in peace. I'm feeding small pinky mice, 2x a week; I suspect it's time to move up to a slightly larger pinky mouse, 1x a week. Maybe this will cut down on the daily messes. (The breeder agreed he was ready for a larger pinky.) He generally messes about 5 minutes after I've held him. It's not a problem -- I just keep a paper towel handy the first five minutes or so.

He really is a neat creature -- I can see how they can be addictive.

cool, as long as he isnt getting stressed out, 15-30 mins is fine. if you notice him getting stressed out easily, i'd suggest shorter time. only thing is i would reccomend giving 48 hours after eating. and when you notice him getting in to the shed part where his eyes are glazed over, he wont be able to see very well. at this point it's suggested to let him be, because of the fact that he may be more agressive in defense because he cant see very well.

It starts out of harmless curiosity. Then the fever hits.Soon all your free time will be spent in the classifieds section and cleaning up poop.Your freezer will become a small mammal graveyard. All your friends and family will start talking about you.And all I can say is (WELCOME)...Paul

I noticed you mentioned the Fort Worth Zoo. Cool place huh. I'm in Fort Worth. Maybe were neighbors. Texas needs more snake lovers. Congrats on the snake purchase, and good luck.

shes been reading our posts everyones saying that she'll want more..and shes like "oooooh crap what have i gotten myself into now..." lol. But yeah Leslie, you'll love 'em. I'd strongly suggest if you like your corn, go looking at rat snakes. Corns are actually a subspecies of rat snakes, and rat snakes have a huge variety of colors and sizes. if you are interested in getting one around the same size, i cant say enough (and nobody in the rat snake forum caould either) about the texas bairdi. freakin BEAUTIFUL snakes!
