Mike,

The general consensus on this forum seems to indicate that aspen is the best substrate for Easterns. I happen to agree. Cypress mulch is also a great alternative.

Years ago, when I began keeping Hognose (westerns), I had them housed on Aspen. The the years, I had a number of incidents where the hog would end up with a sliver of Aspen in the gumline due to digging through this splintery substrate. In one case, the sliver of aspen actually pierced the gum tissue of the snake. The largest problem I had with this is that it went unnoticed most of the time until the poor hog had a decent infection already. I switched over to Carefresh and/or regular Pine and have since never had a single issue. The Pine is more chippy in cut and therefore seems to be easier to spot if it is in the mouth of the snake. In 13 years of keeping 10-30 adult hognose at any given time this way, I have never had a single issue.
But to each his own....just something to think about.

I have heard alot of bad things about pine as far as toxicity of the oils that naturally occur in pine shavings. I use carefresh exclusively. As long as you don't feed in the same cage they live in you can use aspen.
