2 males together

tim5580 Nov 03, 2004 02:33 AM

I know housing 2 males together is bad. What I am wondering is do they fight over the ladies from the time they are babies or do they have to be a little older? I'm not considering putting 2 males together either, I just think when I see 6 unsexed leos in a tank odds are there is 1 or more males.

males will reach sexual maturity at 8-9 months, they fight over territory, females whatever, leos are solitary, having 2 of any sex can cause strees, obviously not a whole lot but if there are many a few could stop eating, thats one reason why healthy leos at petstores can be skinny somtimes, they're dominated by the bigger ones

There was a time I thought I had 3 juvenille females (~5-6 inches), I kept them in one tank, and I discovered one of them always get bashed up here and there (ok, I am a bit exaggerated, they're just very light scratches). I later discovered out of the 3, 2 of them are actually males. So, I removed one of the male while I prepare for the new tanks; to my suprise, I discovered that it was the female that was bashing him up. This female is only slightly larger than him, not even half inch longer. So, I reckon as juvenilles (less than 5-6 inches), size is more important than gender when housing together.

Just my thoughts, I am not saying this is fact.

My friend has had 2 tangerine males housed together for about 2 years now. They get along for the most part with only minor fighting once in a long while. He has since seperated them to be safe. They are both full grown adults, one being larger than the other. The smaller one is always the aggressor.
