Cypress Mulch or Aspen Mulch??

aliaime Nov 03, 2004 01:08 PM

Thru this forum, I decided to purchase a bag of Aspen Mulch thru Petco. I paid about $14.00 dollars. Not bad, but I read that Cypress Mulch is better...can that be confirmed? Also, I read that I can put some Moss in the tank to retain humidity...can that be confirmed as well???

How do you provide moisture to the enclosure with the Moss inside?

well the moss in the tank retains most of the water for a few days...as the water begins to evaporate...it gives my pythons the moisture and humidity needed. i mist the tanks twice a day to to be sure. i do have the them all in a room that does get rather warm and causes the water to evaporate faster...but with the moss, my moisture and humidity have been great and my snakes give me perfect sheds everytime.

I use aspen in most of my enclosures, unless I have picky eaters. I had a breeder/importer tell me that all of his imported balls seem to do the best on moistened cypress mulch for some reason, even though cypress is not what they are on in the wild. When I first learned this, I had a WC female who hadn't eaten in the nine months she was in captivity, and two days after I switched her to the cypress, she started pounding down mice.

hope this helps,
nate.

Cypress Mulch is just a lot cheaper then Aspen. In my opinion it also holds moisture better and doesn't mold as quickly as aspen. I had been using cypress for a couple of years. I recently went back to paper.
