Uro physiology - injured leg

purduecg Nov 03, 2004 02:05 PM

ok, hopefully you guys know me and my views on Uro care well enough to not flame me on this, but if not, let the flames begin.

The middle of last week I realized Archimedes was dragging one of his rear legs behind him. This concerned me, since it was obviously uncomfortable to him, I palpated the area and could not feel any potential digestive tract obstructions, broken bones, or dislocated joints. Though I have to admit it is much easier to assess horses for these things. Archie's leg had a full range of motion, and he did not mind me moving his leg, or prodding him overmuch. At least no more than he ever does.

The day before Archie had tried to take a flying leap out of my hands and I had caught him towards his back end, so I felt/feel terribly guilty and assume he has strained something from that mishap. The next day he was using his leg more, though obviously still "lame", so I decided to give it another day, assuming that if it is a pulled muscle or somethign similar there isn't really anything that can be done anyway. Well, over the weekend he did not improve much more, and last night he was sometimes using it, sometimes not. I called the Vet on Monday since both Uros could do with a check-up anyway, and she just got back to me today (since it wasn't an emergency). It turns out that the entire vet office is out with the flu (there are only 2 of them), and not taking non-emergency patients until the beginning of next week.

My thoughts are still that it is a pull/strain/sprain, and that waiting until the beginning of next week will not really change anything, but does anyone else have any experiences that would say otherwise. ie Think it sounds like something more serious?

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

Elizabeth

I'm not gonna blame you one bit for waiting. Or of the fact that he tried to run.

But if you are really concerned, then try to find a different vet to take him to.

Also it sounds like a pulled muscle or a pinched nerve. If uro's have hamstrings (thats a muscle that runs behind a humans leg and goes from the back top part of the thigh to a little below the bottom of the knee) it coudl have been that. I did that one time while I was sleeping and it hurt to stand on.

Thanks Triad!

I am not particularly worried, but then i started to get worried about the fact I wsn't worried, if that makes any sense. lol.

I think I will just play it out and see what happens. Arch is still eating and moving around, so I don't think it will hurt him. Just interested in getting the opinions of the group.

No problem. It's ok if you don't worry and it's also ok if you worry about not being worried. That's what any reptilian parent would do.

As long as he is eating and basking and doing everything normally then maybe you can wait until the vets get back from having the flu.

Good Luck

I agree with both of you. If everything else is fine and he is sometimes using it then waiting until Monday should be good. If he gets worse then you take him to another vet sooner. Good luck
