quick question....

joijoi29 Nov 03, 2004 02:20 PM

I have two 2-month old beardies together (new to each other) in a 20 long (both are females) Neither are being agressive towards one another but my original baby has licked the other a couple of times. the other doesn't seem to mind at all...she just ignores her. my original baby after, licking her, is now waving to her. Actually they are waving to each other now. Is this ok? I know they may need to be separated in the future, but I dont want to miss any signs.

It's kinda cute they are waving to each other. No head bobbing at all!

So long as neither is acting aggressive, they should be fine together for a few months. I don't know, however, how you can be sure that they're both female at two months old. Personally, I'd leave them together for now, but be on the look out for aggressive behavior as they mature. I usually have to separate the sexes from my clutches somewhere between 6 to 9 months.

thanks for your advice. I was told by the breeders they were females, but I guess there is always room for error. Besides head bobbing, what other agressive signs would I see? They walk all over each other without seeming to care and are still arm waving and an occasional lick. (i hope thats not a taste test! )

Everything you described so far is normal sibling behavior (even though these two may not be related). What to look out for is for them circling one another, puffing out their beards, and generally trying to intimidate each other. Some aggressive dragons will try to snatch food out of another's mouth, nip at tails and toes, serious stuff like that.

If you don't see any of this behavior and both are eating and growing at the same rate than they should be compatable for the time being. Keep in mind things can change very quickly though. When I'm raising dragons I have to organize the babies into different containers usually based on growth rates. Some dragons just thrive and grow much faster than others, even from the same clutch. In my experience you shouldn't have problems with babies hurting each other (so long as they always have access to food) until they start to reach sexual maturity (which can range from about six months to a year, all depending on their growth rate).

If one stops eating or if one grows significantly faster than the other (often seen in beardeds that are paired with one more donimant than the other) then i would seperate them. Those are signs of stress that can have ill effects on thier health. A 20g is obvioulsy too small to house them for long too. If you plan to keep them together for ever, you will most likely need at least a 75-90g tank with 2 basking perches at the same height level (in different areas). The most dominant bearded will always be sitting above the less dominant ones. This alone can cause undue stress on your animals. But like i said, if the permenant enclosure is big enough and you have equally sized and positioned perches, you shouldbe ok. Make sure, too, that if you do end up with a male, you seperate them asap.
