Breeding Size?

Araneae Nov 03, 2004 03:32 PM

Hi all!

I have a BRB female; she is about 7 years old.
She weights 7.3 pounds and is around 6.4 feet long. Is she big enough for breeding? Or should she weigh a pound or two more?

Another question: Could anybody please give me a link to a site, with some sort of list about scale counts for the Epicrates cenchria complex?

Thanks on advance!

She's plenty large and mature enough for breeding. Good luck.

Araneae,
...Your BRB is plenty big enough for breeding. The minimum weight for successful breeding of females seems to be a little over 3.25 pounds. More weight than that gets bigger litters and less problems with gestation and delivery.
...As far as I know there is no website with the scale count info. There is some scale count numbers in Jerry wall's book "The Living Boas". This is really a good book for anyone who is interested in any of the Boas. To paraphrase the information in the book and include a little from other sources: Cenchria cenchria have 45 to 51 midbody scale rows, alvarezi have 47 or more, gaigei have 43 or fewer, crassus have less than 47. Cenchria cenchria have 260 to 275 ventrals, maurus have 227 to 237 and gaigei are usually between these two numbers. There is enough overlap in scale counts for several of the subspecies that positive identification without collection location information is sometimes impossible.
