Collard Jumping

Fourstrings88 Nov 03, 2004 04:03 PM

Well some people asked me some questions about my Collard becuase I was concerned about him jumping or scratching now I had recently mad him a huge enclosure mad out of melamine so the only place that is clear is the plexiglass in the front evrywhere else is all covered with the melamine and I do have a branch in thier for him but only one and I could fit some mroe things in there but I do not waan waste money and soemone told me to change the bulb which could be a phsycological problem if in fact this is true I would have no problem changin the bulb but what bulb would be best for this what brand and kind i have a 75 which is hto enough for him but it would be ok to go to a 80.

As for a mate I am not sure about that but it is possible but I would have to get a female whcih means that magical word "Breeding" now a friend is ok but I really cant be surprised with a bunch of eggs is there some way to prevent this and keep the female in thier and is this the best suggestion there is a local show coming up so I could look at the show prices.Would thier be Aggresivness ANY SUGGESTIONS AND ANSWER OR JUST COMMENTS WOULD BE HELPFUL I APERCIATE ALL OF YOU TAKING YOUR TIME TO REPLY AND GIVE ME SOME INFO.

aslo 1 mroe thing would they breed alot or I guess just ounce a year info on breeding would be good thank you!

I think they only breed once a year.
Male Male = Major Aggression
Get a 100 watt bulb. I don't know the brand, but it is a white box with orange text, and it has a picture of a chameleon on it.
Is the branch the only thing you have in there!? Get rocky surfaces! Get hide-away spots! It's not a waste of money if it's for the well-being of a pet. I know money can be an issue (from experience) but get the best you can.
I'm not sure you could prevent breeding if you got him a mate... Eve, Vonnie, Fabian, or someone along those lines should be able to give you better info than myself.

Good luck.

for a basking bulb you can even use a flood light from somewhere like the home depot. they are usually cheaper and hotter than the fancy shmancy reptile bulbs. hidespots, rocks, branches and whatnot are important. you can find rocks in streams or anywhere outside. just be sure to clean them with really hot water and maybe a tiny tiny bit of bleach in the water. there are ways to clean wood but i have no idea how to do that.
usually if you do not brumate your lizards, they will not mate. BUT that is no guarentee. i have never brumated mine and i had eggs like crazy this year. depending on the specie, they can breed 1-3 times a year and have 2-12 eggs but usually more around 6, at least in my case. the girls hold the eggs in them for about 3 weeks and then they lay them and the eggs need to be incubated for about 50 days. that is just a quick rundown on egglaying. this was my first year with eggs and it can be frustrating when they die on you but i have one that should be hatching any day now and i am so excited.

Hey Chris,

As Amanda said, Your Collared will benefit greatly from rocks in his enclosure. In the wild, you always find them in close vicinity to rocky hillsides. Just make sure that the rocks can't be moved if your buddy decides to dig a burrow, as they often do. otherwise you may have a flat lizard, and I don't mean those guys from Africa.

I have never heard of a bulb change resulting in psychological problems, unless they were bad off and suddenly became better as a result of a better bulb.....80 would be ok, but most people I know use 100 watts. Its really all about tank size.
Your tank is quite large, and would be fine with a 100 watt.

As to another Collared, you are correct in that males will probably kill each other due to stress. Some excpetions, but I wouldn't chance it. Yes, a Male and Female would probably mate if you left them together, but you aren't obligated to rear the eggs......I'd decide that when the time comes. I don't want to speak for anybody, but I'd be willing to bet you could sell the eggs, or give them away if you really didn't want them.....
I don't know.

As to your collared jumping, its a fact of Collared keeping. They just do it. I'd be more worried if the Collared never jumped, but thats just me. Good luck man.

yes, definitely make sure they cannot dig under the rocks. i have had an all too recent experience with that.

Your lizard might be less jumpy if you let him run about a room supervised. Keep in mind not to let him run anywhere where you put pesticides.
