Breeding Mice vs Rats???

Slamdaccord96 Nov 03, 2004 06:36 PM

I was wondering which type if rodent would be easier to keep/breed? Or are they the same? Also, is one cheaper than the other? I have read that the mice can have a very unpleasant smell and that doesn't sound too great. By the way...these little critters will become dinner for a juvinile and some subadult ball pythons. Thanks for any advice as I have never bred rodents before!

For overall breedability I would suggest rats, especially for ball pythons. It takes a long time to breed a mouse and grow it large enough for a large python. From gestation to adult size, a mouse will take nearly 3 months. A rat can get to the equivant size in about a month.

Male rats don't carry/produce the musky odour that male mice do. Rats are less prone to consuming their young and once settled together, breed quite regularly and produce litters as large if not larger than mice. Rats are also more intelligent and inquisitive than mice. Only real drawback about rats is they do need more space and eat more than mice but their pros far far outway their cons.
