help please! how to warm a cold lizard

nate351 Nov 03, 2004 07:52 PM

I bought a 3 year old rhino from the classified ads, and the shipping company lost her. she was supposed to be here today by 10:30 this morning, but now will be here some time tomorrow. She should be on heat packs, but she has been sitting in the crate in Ohio (in god knows what kind of unheated warehouse) since 2am last night. When she gets here, if she is still alive, what is going to be the best way to warm her up? should I do it relatively quickly, or slowly? what time frame will be the most healthful and least stressful for her? I am extremely unhappy as the shipper paid extra for guaranteed 10am delivery, and now she is going to be a day and a half late. The customer service people were NO help. Grrr....

Thanks,
nate.

Cyclura are pretty hardy animals. She may be perfectly fine even tho she is a bit cool. Warm her up slowly and steadily. Let her adjust to ambient room temperature and then you can try a slightly warm bath to further warm her and help rehydrate her. Best of luck. Who was the carrier?

She was shipped via DHL. She was insured, and guaranteed by 10:30 the next morning. Well, I just got her, and it is 10am TWO mornings later. She was in a calico bag, in a tiny box, and her heat packs had all but run out. However, she came out kicking and snapping, obviously unhappy with her travel accomodations. She is now in a holding pen, adjusting to room temp. thank you so much for your advice. Seeing her this feisty reassures me that she should be fine. and with the way we feed our animals, she will be fat, too.

thanks again,
nate.

I'm very glad to hear that she arrived safely. Thanks for posting and again, good luck with her. Rhinos are awesome!
