New rat snakes came today! with pics...

lolaophidia Nov 03, 2004 08:38 PM

Had to share, I received my trio of Asian rats today from Steve Emerick out at Napa Valley. They're lovely (but you be the judge) and settling in to their new homes.

First the Kunasir Island rat snake (climacophora)

I'm looking forward to watching the colors intensify with this one over the years.

Next the Red Bamboo rat snake (coxi)
pretty blurry, but cute pic- this guy's not shy at all!

then a good clear one

And finally the Vietnamese Long-Nosed rat snake (Rhynchopis boulengeri)- what a cute little bugger!

I can definitely see my self setting up some display cages for these snakes!

What a trio of great animals. That must have felt like Christmas.

lolaophidia Nov 03, 2004 08:48 PM

I needed a Halloween present for my self, since I couldn't wait till Christmas- plus shipping is kind of rough then due to the weather. And now no more till next year- I promise (well I promised that back in June too, but I couldn't pass these up).
I'm hoping they do well in my care. I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, but there's not much in print on the Rhynchopis that I can find, other than on the internet.

It was a package deal, so I don't really have individual prices for the snakes. They aren't that common, so I can't really give a realistic ball park for what one might run as a single. It would really be based on availability. Steve had others for sale in the classifieds here a couple weeks ago, but I don't recall the pricing on them.
Save your money though, cause when they do come around, you have to be ready!

Awesome score Lora!!! You got 2 out of 5 of my attack plan for this coming year. Randy W.

I'm very happy . I'd known I'd eventually get a coxi and was interested in the climacophoras but I didn't think I'd see a Rhyno available within my price range any time soon. Now to save up for a Japanese Forest rat snake... or two- hey they're small!

Just curious, what are the others on your list??

One of the porphyracea subspecies is definatly right up there. Moellendorffi and prasina round out my elaphe must get list along with your new ones. I had planed on getting a couple of them this year but personal problems put that on hold until next year unfortunatly.
Daytona was pure torture this year for me. Rex had a nice size yearling female prasina for a good price. Robin at pro exotics had a nice size pair of yearling long-nosed rats for a good price. Karl Krumke had a hatchling pair of porphyracea and two yearling pairs of moellendorffi. There were also several coxi to be had. It was driving me insane. The year I had no money everything I wanted was available. I guess thats the way it works. Well enough of my whining. You have an awesome new group there. ENJOY!!! Later, Randy Whittington

Question on that vietnamese long-nosed. That thing just looks awesome, what is their temperment like? I haven't ever seen anything like it before, however I dont konw much about asian rats. Those must run a pretty penny or two, also. I have my blue beauty and I love her, I was just wondering are all asian rats going to have the attitude she does?

Well for now, he's pretty timid and tiny. I'm trying not to even look at him too much so he'll settle in. I don't know much about their adult temperaments, but since they're semi-arboreal, I'm thinking they'll be pretty racey. I don't think he'll be an as agressive feeder as my beauty snake though. If he ends up being a more relaxed snake, then I'll set him up in a vertical style display enclosure with lots of things to climb on and plenty of greenerey to hide in.

I dont think my heart could handle all that at one time. After they settle in I sure would like to see some more pics...Paul

I really want to document the color changes on the climac and the Rhyno, so I'm sure I'll be breaking out the camera often.
Yeah!

Yes, he's doing very well with Asian rat snakes. So far, the coxi seems to have the most personality of the 3. He's musked me and threatened to bite when I was holding him for one of the shots(not that a little guy like that could hurt you). He's a beauty, for sure.

..you were pretty excited about it when I saw you at the Richmond show. They're beautiful, and you're lucky -- or do I have that backwards? Anyway, I know they'll get the best of care from you.

lolaophidia Nov 05, 2004 06:34 AM

Hi Andy,

Thanks, and I'll do my best to grow these critters up! It was good to see you and chat about your beauties at the show. I only bought mice and books there since I knew the trio were coming, and I felt kind of guilty that I'd already blown my snake budget. I forget that there are locals that keep these animals too. Do you ever get out to the Herp and Bug meetings? I let my membership lapse, but it would do me good to get out and talk to people every once in a while. I need to get out in the field more next year... spent all summer working and cleaning cages.
Take care!
