vision and neodosha?

somegirl Jun 30, 2003 12:18 AM

just wondering, whats the big deal about these cages? soon enough my animals will all need upgrades from their 10 gallon tanks (and one 20 and 30) but these cages seem awfully expensive to me. am i better off just building myself or buying bigger aquariums?

The big deal is that they are easy to clean and will pretty much last forever. They are really suited for snakes that void lots of liquid that would ruin a wood cage - i.e. Colombian boas. You can spray the cages without worry (good for a ball python near shed time.) Plastic cages makes cleanup and disinfecting much easier compared to wood.

If you have the time, tools and know-how you can build your own cages from wood. Personally, I think the Colombian boas, rainbow boa and ball python would do well in plastic cages.

Some suggestions:
Colombian rainbow boa: 3ft slant-front Neodesha (great price, the best)
Colombian boa: 4 or 6ft Neodesha or 4 or 6ft Vision
Ball python: 3ft slant-front Neodesha or Vision 221

I've seen people sell years old vision cages for what they paid for them. I don't think that can be said of Neo cages.

Didn't Neodesha go out of business?

I would gladly sell you any Visions I have, but I wouldn't sell my Neos

People seem to sell used Neodesha cages for whatever they can get because they are usually cracked and discolored.

People seem to be selling used vision cages for close to the retail price.

I still wonder why Neodesha went out of business.

I have had some vision cages for 6 years and they look like the day I bought them.

the bigger cages just seem sooooo expensive to a new herper/new college grad like me
i mean, i can handle buying one of the smaller and cheaper ones, but the big ones are quite an investment. and with 3 boas....
althoguh with 3 cats that like to climb on everything in a small room, the stackable aspect is quite nice. *sigh* ill just have to go marry a rich man!

anybody wanna sell me their old cages? or be my sugar daddy?

I have a Neo that is 8 years old. No cracks, no discoloration.

Cracking is caused by owners who improperly heat (overheat) or try and attach an extremely hot ceramic emitter in a socket directly to the plastic cage without a junction box or heat sink.

Discoloration is normal for ABS plastic exposed to ultraviolet light but does not affect strength. I have a shelf liner from Neodesha that is used in an outdoor bunny hutch. It has been subject to sun and rain, Winter and Summer for about 5 years. It is discolored, but as strong as ever. I can kick it, bend it, whatever with no brittleness.

I'm not saying Visions are not excellent. I'm saying that Neodesha cages are not flawed in some way such that they had to go out of business. I imagine the competition from Vision initially took its toll. Speaking for myself, I really like the simple, sloped-front design of the Neodesha cages. So easy to access, clean and see what is going on before you open the door. I have Visions, Neos and other types of plastic cages. The Neos are my favorite though.

I have used neodesha for many years. I have had NO problems with them at all. The only gripe i had about them was the 24" cage rack was not a great item. But the product IMO is far better for the price than vision. I had some leucistic TX rats get terrible nose rubs on the visions gap between the sliding glass doors. Neodesha's solid glass front is perfect for these guys now.

Now I have been to many herp shows, and spoken to many distributors of caging products. I have been told many times that Neodesha did not go out of business due to lack of sales. I was told that the Bush Herp portion of that individuals business only made up aproximately 20% of his total business ventures, and decided to close the Bush Herp (Neodesha included)portion of it down to concentrate on the "Larger picture".

I am happy that Neodesha is comming back, and as soon as I am done with alot of traveling I have been doing for my current job I will be looking into Neodesha once again.
