Basic question ln Pythons in general

crtoon83 Nov 03, 2004 11:45 PM

I have been paying attention to local snakes around here for a few years, however we don't really have any pythons around the western panhandle of florida. About 6 months ago I got my first snake - a licorice stick black rat snake, and i've gotten now a total of 5 rats, including one vietnamese. I really enjoy my rats, but I am just really more curious than anything to see what kinds of pythons there are out there. I know the basic gray ball python and the green and red tree pythons, but nothing about them really. If anybody knows a good website, or if people just wanted to post pics of their pythons i'd love to see what kinds there are. I kind of have this idea that when i hear the word "python" i think of a gray ball python.

Just kidding. Welcome to the forum. There is a ton of information here, but your question is pretty broad. Why don't you just look around? You'll see tons of examples. Also, go to "Forums" and the Old Forum archive. More information concentrated in one place.

I don't know much. I began keeping snakes almost 3 years ago. For a beginner snake, everyone suggested cornsnakes and ball pythons. I have a corn snake (at the largest, my corn collection was 5), 4 ball pythons, two Irian jaya or Papuan carpet pythons and a jungle carpet python.

Carpet pythons of all types seem to make very interesting and rewarding captives. I love my jungle, and I have had my IJ/Papuans for abotu a month and a half and they blow me away. very cool snakes. I also want to know what pythons are out there other than balls, retics and burms. carpets are very awesome, in my experience.

At my local respected reptile shop I saw a trio of Macklott;s pythons that took my breath away. They were awesome. I also love the look and mystique of the green tree pythons, as well as the bredl's or centralian pythons. There seems to be a large assortment out there. You might start at the classifieds, see what interests you look-wise and then research wether you can care for them properly or not.
