Dog Food as Gutload???

leosdaddy Nov 04, 2004 07:40 AM

I was told recently that using dog food for insect gutload is a bad idea. They said it can cause a bacterial infection. I've been using it as a main ingredient now for several months. I use some fairly high dollar dog food, no red dye or such, and I grind it into a fine powder. Do any others use dog food, or do any others know of any danger with it.
Thanks!

I'd used it as a supplement since '88 but value the opinion of Marcia. She was nice enough to send me a long email telling of a nightmare experience with bacteria from bad crickets. I stopped using dog food immediately after reading her findings. From what I've seen of Marcia and the high regard in which she is held, anything she says should be given serious consideration. Thanks Dan. What did you use to replace the dog food?

I use chicken laying mash (Layena) and/or monkey chow, ground up in a coffee grinder.

Thanks! I checked out some thiings that Marcia had to say about this, and hopefully I'm on the right track now with my gutload.
