CWDs and Paint Fumes

fafnir Nov 04, 2004 07:53 AM

We have a very large 8'x7'x4' plexiglass and aluminum viv in our living room that our CWDs live in (yes there was some snout rubbing and yes we were able to sort it out).

The question is this: We want to paint the kitchen that adjoins the living room. I have been cautioned to let any painted viv air completely out (maybe for months) to get rid of paint fumes. Just wondering if anyone had any experience in painting a ROOM that a viv was in.

While the viv is not completely airtight, it is fairly well sealed. In addition, the vent holes are small to preserve humidity. I am thinking this will be OK.

Any experience with this?

Thanks

A painted viv does need to air for a considerable time. The reason for that is even a small amount of fumes trap in a small area can linger and become deadly. As far as painting the room is conserned, The waterdragon will be no more or less suseptable to there effects then you would be, probably less since they have a lower metabolic rate. I would use myself as a guide and if I couldn't stay in the room because of the fumes, my waterdragons shouldn't either. I have painted in the same room as my waterdragons and it really wasn't a problem. I opened a few windows and got a fan going for a couple hours and they were fine.

Thanks, we suspected as much but were hoping for some reassurance from someone who had done this before.

Appreciate the reply!
