Thanks for sharing. THey almost look blue. What is their story again? Inheritance of the trait?
Thanks,

Australian Addiction Reptiles (and ball pythons)
These two were the result of a pastel male bred to what appears to be a normal female. Of four babies, there were no pastels, just these and two normal looking siblings. My best guess at this point is that the female harbors a recessive gene that even at the heterozygous level combined with the pastel gene to create something new. Certainly some things have happened this year that have everyone reevaluating the mechanics of inheritance in ball pythons.
Sure is fun -

What does mom's belly look like? How about the belly on these two?
I'm very interested in seeing what all the odd co-dominant combos (pewter, ebony, this) produce. I wonder if the fact that the combination appears to be greater/weirder than the sum of the two parts is any indication the two genes are related in some way. Maybe some of these pairs are alleles - different mutations of the same gene - and will not be able to produce any normals bred to normals. In your case the mom might be some subtle co-dominant like it sounds like cinnamon can sometimes be.

Nice and interesting looking ball pythons, Im also curious on the backround of these, hopefully it is a genetic thing though, because those two look amazing.
that when you breed those two together you will get solid black/brown ball pythons. They look almost identical to Gulf Coasts so called Labyrinths that I have seen.

Good luck with your future projects with those two...What r your plans with them aside from breeding them together..

Thanks for the feedback. I plan to breed the same parents together again this year of course. If my suspicions as to the how these genetics work is correct, then in the future there should be a super form, and maybe a different form that is not only super but also homozygous for the contributing recessive trait. I also envision lots of cool combinations: with yellow belly, pied, albino, cinnamon pastel.............. Combination potential with even the currently known morphs in ball pythons is almost endless - way more than any of us will get a chance to see in this lifetime.

Heck they almost don't even look like ball pythons as I know them. I was about to ask if they were ball pythons even. Good luck with those two!

Amazing, they're so black they DO look blue. Is there anything at all unusual looking in the female? I hope you get it figured out because I'd like to see a lot more of those around.

good luck with them. Keep us posted with this year's progress.
That is one of the most beautiful pythons I've ever seen, congrats. What's the tempermeent like?

---------
0.1.0 Ball Python - Shaman
0.0.1 Green Iguana - Ike
0.0.1 Green Treefrog - Ernie
0.0.1 Squirrel Treefrog - Bert
2.2.0 Cats - Pumpkin, Furball, Pixie, Stich
1.0.0 Cockatiel - Ozzy
0.1.0 Budgie - Tweetie
0.1.0 Betta - Isis
The main thing I've noticed as far as temperament goes is that they are always hungry - and are prone to mistaking fingers for rats. They do seem to get better looking with age.
Thanks,
Dan
