for all your support!

I really am thinking that I want another uro although i do have some concerns about going through a loss again. First of all how long have some of you had your uros? I was counting on a long term pet.

As for breeds. Magnus was a Macfad and I loved his coloring and personality. Although I am partial to the Macfad now I tend to think that I would not want another uro that looked so much like Magnus (or maybe not as good and would not want to make comparisons). So I am now leaning towards the Ornate (my orig search when I found my Macfad) or a Saharan.

Can anyone compare for me the personality and hardiness of these? From what I understand the Macfad does not come with too much info.

I also can not imagine ordering through Doug or Lindsay without holding the uro first etc. Any thoughts on this compared to my usual pet store (this is a good dealer in this area with pics posted in the Uro book by J. Wells).

Sorry for all the questions but I need to make sure I make the right choices.

I completely understand about holding the pet first, I was really concerned and nervous about it too. I think it may be a larger issue if you buy adult Uros, but the babies are just so cute they steal your heart right away, and noone really knows their personalities yet anyway.

I have had Archimedes since October of 1998, so just over 6 years. I wish I had a better idea of how long the little buggers live, but in general I do think they are long term pets. Unless something unforeseen happens, which sadly can occur with any species (including people).

I am glad you are thinking about opening your heart to another lizard friend, whatever you choose will be very very lucky.

We rescued two Uro malis from a clueless dealer four years ago; one died six months later, but the other (Wizard) is still with us, doing well. My dragon-wannabe daughter, Elora, was terribly upset when Lizzie didn't make it, but she's been a joy with our other scaley companions.

I recently lost my deskmate, a rescued juvenile iguana, Ziggy, that had ben part of my office for more than a year-and-half. While I may ressemble a biker wannabe (large, bald, bearded, 40ish), I was distraught -- even when the vet said it wasn't my fault. Ziggy died in my hands, giving me one last feisty look before passing on.

Heck, it still makes me teary-eyed, two weeks later!

I thought about it long and hard, then went looking for a new companion. I ended up finding *two* critters to keep me company: Rex, a young igauna who had an injured tail, and Clyde, an African plated lizard. Both guys needed a home, and now they have one.

Lizards are my hobby; I spend most of my time programming computers, so lizards are a nice passtime that distracts me from technology. My wife and daughters love lizards as much as I do, so it works well for everyone.

Get another uro. They're sweet, easy to care for, and just downright pleasant. You won't regret it.

it takes me a long time to get over losing a scaly member of my family too. i just lost one on saturday and it still actually makes me cry sometimes but then i just go kiss all the ones that i still have. no lizard can replace the ones you have lost, but new ones will at least bring more joy in your life

I'd give Rex a kiss, but I have this strange vision of an fat, hairy guy running around the house with a lizard hanging form his lip.

Rex's got quite a bite.

I have kissed our Uro mali, but he's pretty mellow.

Mike-

Good for you! Another pet will in no way diminish what Magnus meant to you, and may help you feel better, too.

I've not had an ornate, but I think I would recommend them over a saharan - not through any fault of the saharans, but because so many folks have lost them in the last year. If you do choose a saharan, get a CB, for sure. Too much at stake to risk a WC with health problems. They are beautiful, but so are ornates - and ornates are supposed to have more friendly personalities.

What do CB and WC mean?

My guess is cb-cross breed.

CB = captive bred
WC = wild caught

If you see CBB, that's captive bred and born, since sometimes folks cheat a little and say CB is captive born, which can mean a WC female caught when she's gravid. Then she lays in captivity, thus the hatchlings are "captive born".

>>I would not want another uro that looked so much like Magnus

I know how that feels. I lost a female saharan uro in August. Then I got another one to replace her and I have to tell you, I have a hard time calling Iris by her name because she looks exaclty like Phoebe did.

I'm still taming the saharans. Right now Orion is very skittish because he knows if I come for him he is getting his medication. But Iris is calmer.

Now if you want a colored uro then go for a Saharan. But if you want a good companion uro then go for a Mali. Ares, my mali that I've had for 3 years, is the calmest thing on earth. He lays on my shoulder and sleeps the day away if he can. He is the most laid back thing ever.

Just try to see if you can find someone with all of the species you are looking at, then spend time with each of them and see which one you like best. That's all I can offer.

I hope you find what you are looking for and I wish you the best of luck with your search and my condolences again for Magnus.
