Working with plants,

TheImpaler Nov 04, 2004 12:51 PM

I am currently keeping my dart frog in a plastic shoe box. I bought a plant for him, but because is his current cramped living conditions, I have it in a lidless Critter Keeper. I don't really know what the plant is... it's broad leafed and a solid green. I think it's a type of Aroid.

Anyway, I was wondering if I could give the plant miracle-grow or something. I wouldn't try something like that with the frog around the plant, but since they are seperated I was wondering if it was safe to do.

Thanks in advance.

Once the plant is in the terrarium, you will probably be glad you didn't give it Miracle Grow. It will do just fine without it. The Aroid family members are almost always pretty enthusiastic growers, especially in terrariums.

Sounds like you probably have a pothos or similar. Definitely no miracle grow. You should think more of getting a larger set up going though.

I agree with a larger set up. The more space you can provide, the better. It's hard to work with a 10 gallon and do much with it.

i have afully planted ten gallon tank and it's housing 1.1 tincs.
the plants are selaginella; or rainbow moss, three types of vining peperomia, a well kept black velvet alcasia, and some hardcape; Redwood that is covered in moss, and even the fern spores that were on it are sending up their first leaves.
i used tree fern panel as a background, it's well planted with selaginella, those peperomias and i have one cissus plant cutting that is sending out some great plant growth.

ten gallon tank is easy to build, and maintain!
you just need to establish a balance, create the nitrogen cycle, and make sure you have high humidity, as well as air flow.

If you want, i'll send you some photos.

it's sounds already like you jump in with out checking the water...you have a dart in a plastic show box?
an unkown plant? and want to kill the frog with harsh non-organic chemical? what????

go to google, type in naturalistic vivarium plants, visit the first site you see, and ask them your question.

Never use chemicals, the frogs as well as most other animals can die. dart, like all amphibians are very sensative to salts, like in fertalizers, and will die a very harsh death.

wow...
