should I be soaking my Red Tegu?

AlteredMind99 Nov 04, 2004 02:36 PM

My Tegu has a water dish thats plenty big enough for him but i never even see him drink. Should i be soaking him occasionally to make sure everything is going right?

Also, he is SUPER scared of ecerything. He wont eat if you can see him...i feel so bad for him. He is never aggressive, just very scared, any advice on how to calm him down?

Soaking can never really hurt providing it is done right. Place him in the tub and fill it with lukewarm water NOT HOT. Make sure it is no higher than his shoulders when he lies on his belly. Most important do not leave him unattended! Occasionally you will hear of someone leaving a lizard soaking on its own and they come back and it has drown.

I agree, soaking never hurts as long as it is done right. About the drinking, if the urates are white/yellow and there is some liquid also, then he is drinking. I have heard many times that orange urates can mean dehydration/urinary problems, but have never experienced this myself. I soak my guy once a week every week just for good measure. Again, double check the urates and make sure some liquid urine accomponies them.
