nasty corn

AlteredMind99 Nov 04, 2004 02:39 PM

I recently got an adult snow corn snake. She is probably about 36inches long and about 3 years old and she is nasty! The person i got her from used was only going to use her as a breeder, so she was never handled much. Thats ok with me cause i was going to use her as a breeder too, but she is so nasty you can't even go near the tank without her striking at you. I am using my snake hook to pick her up and put her in her feeding containor. (she has a GREAT feeding response! lol)

I want to tame her to the point where i can at least pick her up with out her biting me. The only way i could think of to do this was to pick her up using thick gloves until she stops biting. Is this a good idea?

Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

i've heard rumors that tempermant of parents can be passed to young. do you really want to breed nasty, mean corns?

something to think about

AlteredMind99 Nov 04, 2004 02:57 PM

I suppose it could happen. I am pretty sure the only reason this girl is nasty is because she has NEVER, and i mean, never been held. she has probably always been fed in her enclosure too.

its hard to say whether its genetic nastiness, or environmental.

i'd still like to be able to at least pick her up

Yes, it is ok to wear some gloves when handling this snake. The other reply to this post, I believe it from kingofspades, touched on something though that you might want to consider. I have worked with some lines of corns in the past that were a little less than nice . Their offspring seemed to also be a little less than nice. Maybe if the temper tantrum snake was paired with a mellow snake the attitudes might help cancel each other out. I have no proof of this, just giving you some food for thought.

i read it in reptile magazine. it was about green anacondas and how most were wc and mean. when bred, the babies would be mean.

these two guys hunted down a docile male and docile female, bred them, and the babies were calm as can be.

i had heard rumors of that happening with corns.

I read that article too

You are probably right, unless i can get her really tamed down i wont breed her. But I still want to be able to handle her. So everyone agrees the best way to do this is to hold her wearing gloves and then hopefully she will eventually mellow out?

Has anyone ever had a nasty adult snake mellow down by consitant handling?

Thanks for the replies!

male yellow rat snake. His name was satin because he was so nasty, bit everything, musked al over the place. But i started holding him with gloves and 2 days ago i just got up enought nerve to hold with without gloves and he didnt bite or musk the whole hour and a half i was holding him. so yeah jsut use gloves and she'll come around once she realized you arnt trying to hurt her, plus feed in a diffrent box is already s step in the right direction.

Yes that subject line sounds somewhat wrong I know, lol.

Honestly now, I have a 5 month old blue beauty, and she would bite me multiple times every time i handled her. I started wearing latex gloves, and when she bites it, it doesnt taste good. Then she decides she doesnt like it and learns not to bite your hands. After about a week I could stop wearing the gloves and she hasnt had a biting problem since!
