what type of incubator to use?

billcherep Nov 04, 2004 03:24 PM

I hope to have some eggs in a couple of months and have a cheap $30 "still air" incubator. Can I use this and if not what should I use? Cheap alternatives. Expensive ones. Wouldn't mind all options and what are the advantages to a more expensive one. Should I get one with a fan? Thanks

you can use your still air incubator but i would strongly recommend you place your eggs on about 1/4-1/2 inch thick wad of newspaper, because those incubators are terrible with moisture
just spray the newspaper down with WARM water every 2-3 days
and especially in between the sheets of newspaper you want 95-100% humidity i just hatched out 6 eggs 2 weeks ago.with this method oh and go to walmart and get a $10 electronic thermometer
you wont go wrong between 88-91 degrees

Sounds good, let me get this straight. Underneath the tupperware, with holes in it, I should put the newspaper? And does it matter that the temp will drop for a little bit when I open the Incubator every 2 to 3 days?

I really like my set up. It consists of a twenty gal. glass aquarium, a submersible aquarium heater, a thermometer, a couple of bricks, a rubber maid shoe box container(with vermiculite), and a styrofoam lid. I poke just a few holes in the lid for ventalation with a screw driver. Be sure to have this set up well before you put your eggs in. Sometimes the aquarium heater can be a little touchy at first and not hold your temp steady. Once the water is up to temp. there is no problems. The great thing is that there is high humidity and you don't have to worry about misting the eggs as often. Be sure to keep your lid at a slant, so not to have the condensation drip on the eggs. Best of luck to you, John
