My Leo's health...

-JayDog- Nov 04, 2004 04:24 PM

On average, for an adult leo, how many giant meal worms andor cricketts should they eat every day? It seems as if both my leos eat every other day. Should I put the leo in a seperate feeding tank? Or put the worms and crickettes in their tank?

I think my female Leo might be sick because her tail is more skinny then normal, what can I do to bring her back to proper health?

Also, I read a lot of mixed opinions about the Sand vs. tile issue. I use "Vita-Sand" (I think that's the name). it shouldn't couse impaction, but I wouldn't know how to check. I'm thinking that I should just go to tile and not worry about it. Is this calcium based sand really safe?

Any advice would be nice.
Thank you,
Jason

I used calci/vitamin based sand for awhile and I didn't like it. It was orange colored and then I noticed that Kalypso's underside was starting to turn orange. Now I use tile and it works very very well.

I feed her wax worms, mealworms and crix. But she's now stopped eating crix for the rest of the year so she's eating waxies and mealies.

I suggest feeding your skinny one some waxies. She might find them more appetizing then mealies.

Most people feed adults every other day, i feed my adult only 5 items every other day because she is getting a little too fat, however many eat in the 10-20 prey item range. In addition to waxworms try butterworms, silkworms or roaches.

Is your female housed with a male? By herself? What are the temperatures at? If she is losing weight for no reason then i would seperate her and get a fecal exam taken to a vet.

Any "reptile" vit/calc sand is NOT safe. I also used to use it. It is NOT digestable. If sand is a must for you switch to sifted playsand. Tile is a better choice if you're worried about impaction, it is also more natural than paper towels.

Good luck

I feed my adults 3 times a week (mon, wed, fri), they eat about 6-8 large crickets or ~10 mealworms per feeding. I only dust the food once a week. I also have 2 girls that only eat adult supers, they get 2-3 per feeding.

I use tiles as main substrate, and I put fine sand in the cracks and gaps to avoid their toes or nail get caught.
