howdy. after class today i went on the nature trail behind the college to flip some rotting damp logs. i found a northern alligator lizard, 4 western fence lizads, and a western skink. well as i was thinking it was a good little walk i flipped over a mossy rock with wooden debris around it to discover a very small, looked like it had hatched a month ago, sharp tail snake. i have never seen one of these but the neon looking red stripes on it made it very hard to miss. unfortunantly i dont have a digi cam nor do i ever take cameras with me since i have been going spontanteously lately. i just thought i would share this little experience with you all and hopefully i will have some pics of future finds to share.

Justin, it would help if you mentioned where you are making your observations. It's nice to find species still active at this late date. You posted once before an mentioned Sierra College but I doubt if many on this forum know just where that is. (I don't.)

I live in Corvallis, Oregon and here too, we are enjoying sunny days with mid 50 degree temperatures which will bring some species to the surface. Took a break from yard work today and west of town I found and adult male and adult female Rubber Boa at two different sites. At the first site there also was a juvenile and adult Northwestern Garter Snake. At the last site visted in neighboring Polk County north of Corvallis, I observed four juvenile Sharp-tailed Snakes and one adult S. Alligator Lizard.

im sorry that i didnt mention where sierra college is. the college is located in rocklin california 14 miles west of auburn off I-80. it has rained for a few days and today everything was nice and moist which i later found out was perfect for finding sharptails. im hoping for another nice day to perhaps find an adult sharptail snake. those are some pretty neat finds. i have only found garters in coastal regions, though they are around snipes park which is in the folsom/orangeville area. hopefully next spring i will be able to post that i have found rome rubber boas, i have a spot that i think will have a few. loon lake up ice house road, ice house road is about 50 minutes from tahoe( i think ). i believe its at least 6,000 feet in elevation. the area has lots of rotting logs, a recessed meadow, lots of mice(they ate some food a friend left out) and lots of rock deposits. however it could be that i wont find any but there are plenty of herps to find up there. anywho, have a good one.
