Recommended Cage size for Taiwan Beauties?

Lyn Nov 04, 2004 10:19 PM

I have found a couple of care sheets but neither mentioned size of enclosure. I am building new 7 foot long by 2 feet front to back and a foot and a half high cages. There will be 3 of them stacked, with enough space between for the heat lamps. One will be for my Carptet Python, another for a Malagasy Giant Hog I'm getting in December, and I'm holding my breath waiting for word as to whether I'll be getting a Taiwan Beauty along with the Hog. If I do get the Beauty, will a 7x2 enclosure be sufficient? I can't go longer than 7 feet. My other option if I put it against a diff wall, would be 5 feet long and 3 feet front to back. More floor space, but harder to reach in to clean, and they couldn't stretch out at all. Any thoughts, or photos of other home made enclosures, would be welcome.

Here is a pic of the Hog

Below is a cage I built for a friend. At the time he wanted to put a Jungle Carpet Python in it but also had it in mind for his Taiwan that was still growing up.

Ironically he's since been bitten by the Uroplatus bug and I doubt this cage will ever see a snake. LOL.

It's 49.5" x 30" x 48" (LxWxH).

Regarding your choices, I do like to provide climbing area, even to those species that don't "need" it. I think either a 5'x3' or the 7'x2' footprint would work. I'd still prefer more height, though.

I've been planning on getting a Taiwan or Blue Beauty next season. I've read that of all the Beauties, Taiwans seem to be one of the most frequent climbers. A 7 foot long cage would be okay, but only being 1.5 feet high would probably be very restictive and while many people don't think snakes have emotion, I personally think that would make for one unhappy snake.

Yeah...taiwans love climbing. I have actually heard of one guy who keeps his taiwan in a 3x3 cage, but its 6 feet high...and he says a vast majority of the time it spends its time "up in the trees"

I will not put him in the new enclosure. I do have a different existing one that is taller, I had it earmarked for an Oustalet's Chameleon, but I can do some shuffeling and give that enclosure to the Beauty instead. He's been living in a 'bin' and has never had an enclosure where he could climb. This will be something new for him.
