Toads with Cancer?

Frogger1985 Nov 04, 2004 10:30 PM

Has anyone ever experienced toads having cancer or a similar disease? I had a toad that had mysteriously broke his arm and it was sticking through the skin. He got an infection in the bone and despite medication and treatment he died. Well i work in a vet clinic and we did a necropsy on him today and his liver was covered in yellow nodules, very similar to liver cancer. I was just wondering if any one had ever had toads or knew of toads getting cancer. I lost one last year that had a tumor on her foot and it spread quikly and made her very sick. I believe she was old when i bought her, since she already had the tumor and was very large and used to being handled. Their syptoms are very similar, so I am just looking out for the future of my other toads.

Thanks

I highly recommend your vet getting the Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry book. There is a review of hepatic neoplasms on page 370. Unfortunately the literature is a little above my head for me to be able to translate it for you.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like that book will help. I just have one question. Do you know of a plac or web site that I can get that book cheaper than $150? All the websites I've checked have the book for $150.

Thanks

It is an expensive book, but you can get it for $125 at the link. It's definitely worth it.
