High intesity lighting for chams

safo Jun 30, 2003 02:36 AM

I have a question regarding using a 440watt high pressure sodium light, im wondering if the amount of red light emitted would be benificial to the cham, not too mention the ficus tree would love it!!!, as far as the heat being emitted i would have to hang the light above about a foot or so as it get is about 90 degress under the light at about 24 inches, if i were to use this type of light, would it get enuff uv radiation? and o yeah, i've been trying to hand feed my tamatave and he dont seem to be going for it, he doesnt run as much, but he sure seems "jumpy" when i try to remove him when im moving his cage outside. i guess the hand feeing will coem in due time

Those sodium lights do not emit any UV and even though they yield much light, the light temperatur is highly unnatural -contains toomuch red and lacks all blue. Hence I prefer to use metal halides of the HQI type with a colour temp of approx 4800K (NDL or D)
