Dancing Alligator Snapper?

Richard_Aaron Nov 04, 2004 11:13 PM

Ok so I bought an alligator snapper(I named it Charisma)and sometimes when I check on him late at night he is going crazy trying to swim through the glass of the aquarium and jumping and dancing around like a lunatic. I can only assume that he doesn't understand why he can't get to the other side. He is about 2 years old and came out of a pond. I got him from John Richards. What is the best thing to do in this situation? I mean should I make a small pond in the backyard and fence it in? I am worried about predators though because there are lots of wild animals around here. Is it possible to make something indoors that he would be more happy in? I am worried about him. Thanks in advance!

Hey,

How large is the enclosure? They are naturally more active at night, but rarely "dance"! What's your water temp? If the turtle is super active it may just be in warm water...certianly doesn't sound to be a bad thing though!

Should you decide to make an outdoor enclosure be very careful! While adult alligator snappers are apex predators as juvies they are a good snack for a variety of other animals. You are worried about predators and should be! Cats, raccoons, and birds would be on the list. I have lost animals in the past due to predation from wildlife. You need to really be sure it is a secure enclosure, and closely monitor the area. You would be amazed how fast a coon and tear through most materials. You may want to consider an electric mesh over the initial enclosure...this would be a great deterrant for most predators! Once your snapper gets bigger it will get lazy more than likely, and just lay around waiting for a meal. I wouldn't be too worried over the dancing though.

Best of luck!

His shell is about 3-1/2 to 4 inches long and I have him in a 55 gallon tank, he has plenty of room. I keep the water at 82 degrees. Well I feel a little better now since you said not to be too worried about it.
