new problem...

pkuyke Nov 05, 2004 12:19 AM

After posting my last message, I went to check on my MHD and one of his "hands" was bleeding. I don't know how this happened, but one of his fingers had a considerable looking chunk missing out of it. I took him and ran his hand under some water for a minute to clean it up and set him down on a paper towel to dry, and while he was just sitting there he peed alot. Along with that came some thick yellowish discharge. He's not looking very good at all. I don't know what to do about the injury except take him to a vet. What I'm wondering is what to have them do to him. I got advice on my last post to have a fecal done, but he BM'd just yesterday, and I cleaned it up already. Since he hasn't been eating as far as I can tell, it wouldn't seem like he'll have another for quite a while. He's been very sluggish, and he seems to be breathing very slowly and irraticaly. Anyone have any advice on what to have them look for at the vet, or even anything I can do that might help him. I've been trying to learn everything I can to take the best care of the little guy, and I really want to have him as a pet for a long time. Any advice at all is appreciated.

There is no need for anyone to reply to this last message. I arrived home this morning to find that "Dubya" had died. I tried to do what I could, but I guess it wasn't soon enough. I'm very sad to see him go since he was a great, loving pet to own.
Perhaps in time, I'll get another. And this time, I'll make sure to do more.

I'm really sorry about that, too. Hopefully, you'll have better luck next time.

Too bad about your dragon. I can only speak for myself, but years ago when I was much younger - and well before the advent of online herping communities, there just wasn't enough information out there to maintain some of the species that to this day, are still relatively difficult to adapt to captive care. It never occurred to me at age 10 to ask my parents to take an apparently ill reptile to a vet. It was even more unlikely that were I to do so, that they would say 'yes'. So, I lost more reptile pets than I would care to account for.

Sadly, you can see why folks like Marcia - and hopefully some others of us, wish to establish a sustainable CB population for dragons. The imports that buyers pay less than 5 dollars for, and then sell for 20, will almost always require an additional 60 to 80 dollars of veterinary care to get them well established.

If you find them interesting, stick around the forum anyway - and ask questions.
