POLL: Which antibiotic does everyone use for R. infections in boa...

robertmcphee Nov 05, 2004 12:22 AM

I have been experiencing R.I. in two of my females this year, one reacted well to being warmed up but the other is having a more difficult time. I have not had to deal with this first hand yet. I remember a while ago someone posted some dosages of some of the better drugs used, Amikacin, Baytri, Cephalexin, Tylan etc. Thank you in advance for any information you might be willing to share.

Thanks
Bob

Hey Robert,
I have had success using Amikacin. I had given my boa shots every three days as recommended by my vet. The respiratory infection cleared up in no time. Best of luck!

The Best that have given me the BEST results are FORTAZ combined with Amicacin. Not only does it work on RI, but any other infection your Boa might get. GOOD STUFF!!!!! Jeremy

Amikacin has worked great for me in the past, but it is potentially nephrotoxic and from what I hear can be lethal to animals that are dehydrated. Also, I have used Tylan and had good results, but I've also seen necrotic tissue at the injection site...possibly an outside source(dirty needle, unclean injection site...) but I did experience this one time. I believe that it is a common potential with Tylan, but I can't say for sure, so that's why I say maybe I presented an outside problem which caused it. Good luck

I am no Vet this is just what I do. You should get your Vets opinion first. When I use Tylan 50 I give .50cc or .8ml every 3 days for every 12 lbs of snake. You can give this by injections or orally.

I had one boa that had a bad RI and I up the dosage to 1 ml. every day for 6 days. I even injected 2 ml. of Tylan into the rat the boa ate. (the rat was frozen thawed) The boa weights about 12 lbs. I have to inject this boa as he always spits up the Tylan if I give it to him orally.

You can buy Tylan at any Tractor supply store or farm animal supply store. It is used for cattle and pigs.

Take care,
Tom

I use Tylan 50 which is 50mg per ml/cc at a rate of 50 mg per kg of animal weight sq. I recently used it on a an adopted bp with major belly rot and cleared it up with no probs. Haven't had any probs with injection sites but I don't use the same site more than once. Using it every 3 days for 5-6 treatments seems to be the norm. I prefer to use Tylan over Baytril if I can.

I have had a high rate of success treating RI symptoms with Tylan only. Paul had an interesting point above. I too noticed a problem at one of the injection sites. The animal actually lost a group of scales but they have since returned. I no longer give injections Sub Q. I now inject the dose into the rat prior to feeding.

Do you just feed them every three days, or do you just give them one dose of Tylan?

Thanks
Bob

Normally I find that one dose will do it. However, I am usually treating mild symptoms because I catch it early before it gets messy. Multiple treatments would take place every 7 days on the normal feeding schedule. You could always feed small prey items on a more frequent schedule if you desired.
