Any baby torts in the San Jose CA show this weekend?

TinaTurtle Nov 05, 2004 08:06 AM

Hi Tortu-colleagues,

I have a juvenile Greek tortoise -his name is Toto, you can see his picture in the message "The Wizard of Tort". Also, in the past I had Argentine Chaco tortoises (Geochelone Chilensis). I had very good luck so far with my tortugas.

I am looking to get a baby turtle -Golden Greek, Hermann's or Greek. I absolutely/definitely/no way jose do not want to get a tortoise in the mail!!!

I am willing to drive to shows/breeders that are relatively close to my town and look at the babies in person.

I live in Northern CA at driving distance of the following cities: San Rafael, Santa Rosa, Napa, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek and anything in the middle (phone area codes 415, 707, 510, 650, 408, 925).

There will be a reptile show in San Jose, CA this weekend, but it doesn't mention anything about tortoises/turtles. The show seems focused on snakes and lizards. Not that they are not as adorable, but I am looking for a tortoise. Anybody knows? I also plan to attend the IRBA show in San Mateo.

A while ago in the Kingsnake classifieds there was a Richards Reptiles in Fresno (didn't have any address). Any references?

I don't want to break any rules of this forum but if anybody has any references ot info about local breeders I'll appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

TT

there will be some good looking CB russians from a longtime breeder at the san jose show.

Thanks Matt and every one who answered!

Unfortunately looks like I won't be able to go! Will have to wait until next weekend (IRBA Show).

You folks have a good weekend,

I live in Fresno and I saw Richards animals and they look great. I also have a friend in our Turtle/Tortoise club that has CB Greeks and Russians(orange) for sale at a really great price. If you want the info email me.

I found out in the BAARS site; this is the info:

EVENT:   IRBA Show
San Mateo, CA
San Mateo Expo. Center, 2495 S. Delaware St, San Mateo, CA.
Sat, Nov. 13, 2004, 10-5;   Sun, Nov. 14, 2004, 10-4.
On the weekend of Nov. 13-14, 2004, the IRBA (International Reptile Breeder's Association) will be having a show in San Mateo, CA.   This is one of the larger commercial reptile shows in the Bay Area. While we usually make a practice of avoiding commercial shows, at this show BAARS will be manning a table encouraging responsible husbandry and habitat conservation. So, if you're going to the show, stop by our table and say "Hello".
For more information on this show, check out IRBA's website at http://www.irba.com.

It says that their site (BAAR's) was last updated oct. 10, 2004. I did e-mail this person with questions about the "tortus" I'm interested but he has not responded yet.
I hope this info is correct, beacuse if after all the planning and driving and family anticipation to go, there's no show, we will be unhappy campers! -tort-hisssssss....! >

Hi. I'm also in your area. I know an excellent Russian breeder in Concord. I've seen his CB babies and they are in excellent condition. Tell me if you are interested.

If you know of any tort. breeders in the greater Bay Area I'd love to know. I'm going to try to go to the show in San Mateo as well, but I have to take off from work so I might not be able to go.

Hi Brian,

I'm looking for a cb either Greek, Golden Greek or Hermann's. I already have a Greek juvenile and I would like for him to have some company -eventually, at first, of course the new baby would have his own terrarium. Yes, you all may think I'm crazy and this is not natural but Toto likes to be on our laps, explore and climb on the couch, be petted and cuddles up with the cat (the warm and the fur I guess). The cat is protective of him and if outside does not let birds or anybody but us to get close to him.

Sometimes he is in his indoor enclosure and he streches out his little neck and follows us with his eyes, and "raps" (moves his arms and legs like he is dancing rap music) to get out. He sure is not shy.

In the past, when I bought my first tort (Arg. Chaco tortoise) ended up having 3 (1 boy and 2 girls), the same thing happened...They came in the kitchen to say hello, be petted, etc. If one of them was missing they will look around for him or her. They seemed to enjoy each other's company as well as humans (our family only - very shy with strangers).

About the breeder, Concord is fairly close so if i change up my mind to a Russian tortu I'll sure e-mail you. I'll also let you know what info I find out.

I hope you can attend the show. We went to the wildlife show in San Jose but never been to a commercial show and looking forward to it.

i was at the san jose show and there were a number of cb tortoise babies -- marginated, herman's, russian, red foot, and a few others.

you should see the same variety at the san mateo show as well.

I don't suppose you remember the approximate prices of some of the baby torts?

TinaTurtle Nov 10, 2004 08:15 AM

Hi Matt,

There were 2 wildlife shows in the San Jose area that weekend: one in Alum Park (the one we went to) and another one in Los Altos College (I think probably you went to that one). And of course the tortus were in that one... Murphy's law -hehe...
The deciding factor was the ticket $ as I had my children and their friends and $25 per person blew the budget. The Alum Park show was free, just a voluntary donation. There talking with one of the BAARS volunteers I learned that the turtles/tortoises were in the other show Still we saw other beautiful reptiles and a great collection of raptorial birds; a great falconry show and presentation. There were no animals for sale but just an exhibit for educational purposes.

If I had known there were tortoises in the other show I would have planned differently and tell everybody to bring their own $. Sounds like it was worth it!

Thanks. I'm seriously thinking now I probably will take Sunday off and at least go to the show at the end.

TinaTurtle Nov 10, 2004 09:02 AM

Hi Brian,

It seems that Matt and I went to different shows. There were 2 in the same area that weekend... we went to the one with no tortus! Talk about Murphy's law!

The East Bay Vivarium in Berkeley CA has some cb babies once in a while (sulcatas and Greek) and also wc Russian juveniles/adults. I got Toto there in January '03 and he was approx. $200. Sulcata were a bit less. The selection varies. There were also an Egyptian and a Spider torts, which were between $300 and $500 if I remember correctly. They are friendly and a good place to ask for information.

I hope this helps.
