I'm thinking I need to start a mouse colony

Nicodemus Nov 05, 2004 09:17 AM

My mexican black king eats alot of mice, so I think I want a small mouse colony to help save some money.

I don't like the idea of feeding live...my biggest concern is freezing. How do you humanely kill the mouse before freezing?

if its full grown, pick it up by the tail and whack its head. if its a pinky/fuzzy just freeze it.

or better yet..just go to www.bigcheeserodents.com and order some in bulk...pretty cheap from them

There was similar question a while back on one of these forums, and if I remember correctly, the consensus was that the best way to euthanize the mice before freezing was to gas them with CO2.
Good Luck!

^ pretty cheap also.

Breeding small quantities of mice is almost not as cost efficent, and it takes a good amount of time to feed and clean the mice everyday. It is somewhat cheaper, but not a whole lot.

ChrisH had a post awhile back that was pretty good... you may want to look for that.

Here is my reply to this same question two months ago. Still holds true. With only a few snakes, you won't save money or time over buying frozen rodents.

Sorry I wasn't around all weekend to read/respond to these posts...

But it definitely looks like bulk will be the way to go. Hmmm....gonna need some extra freezer space somewhere...

i raise them and keep certain colors to try and get different things.....

kind of like a cornsnake project with a 6 week turnaround time lol ....in fact i have bred albino almost totally OUT of my mice
the last litter only had 1 out of 14

it is also cool to watch as the mice grow from tiny babies and you can also feed them off as they get to the exact size for your snake.....(ntm feeding off ones who bite you always feels good lol)
