Catching up

Hey everyone I have been slacking and there is so much good news here! Eve, congrats on your 8 babies, how exciting that must be. You are my hero, you take care of so many. Do you have human children too? I wonder how you manage it all.
Vonnie, I think of your egg every day and hope you hatch out a beautiful little girl. (But we would love a boy, too!) I remember my eggs dimpled in several places soon before they hatched. I freaked and thought I was losing them, but I thnk that is a sign that they are about ready.
Amanda, you are really special. I have a good feeling about your lizards. They are going to get better because you are such a good and caring mommie.
Moko, I am glad to hear you are finding great ways to cope. I have found since I went from 3 to 5 lizards that they don't get enough handling from me, especially because I favor Otis.
So.......I have decided I am going to give Hermes and probably one of my girls to my friend Ric. He is still heartbroken over the loss of his pair. And his daughters have learned a tough lesson they won't repeat. They cried for days, especially the one who forgot them outside. I won't be able to keep 2 males forever anyway. I will brumate Otis and Saige and keep Fawn and the babies awake to play with. After the adults are awake and ok, I'll downsize back to 3 and have more babies!
They have been in their new terrarium for over a week now. The girls loved it right off, but Otis had some anxiety over the move. He didn't eat for a few days and started bobbing his head a whole lot. He is much better now, all settled in, and has even grown back some of his claws.
The terrarium Sam built is great, and they have 4 feet of unobstructed area in the front to run. I don't have a lot of rocks in it, ever mindful of Vonnie's loss. They can climb on the walls and get on the built-in basking shelves, so maybe they don't need a pile of rocks.
Sam has been putting the babies in with the big guys after they have eaten, and has even let them spend a couple of nights in there. I take them out because it makes me nervous! The adults mostly ignore them. Hermes is too big to eat, but Cadence could be a little bigger. The big ones just trounce over the babies like they are not there and I am afraid that will cause an injury. And it is hard for the babies to hunt in the big cage. Cadence is still a bit clumsy and misses about half of her pounces. So I think the babes will stay in their little place another month or so.
I have posted 2 pages of photos of the terrarium and it's construction at: http://vrk.photosite.com/terrarium/
They are all coming out very yellowish and I will be looking for a red filter for my camera to get better photos. I hope you all have a great weekend, and thanks for being here!

wow that is a really nice cage! it seems like they have a lot of stuff to climb on but don't let me deter you from rocks. i just forgot to plant that rock all the way to the bottom. as long as they cannot get under it then they cannot get hurt that way.

Thanks Vonnie,

Sam did do a great job on thier new pad. Yesterday we re-arranged things a bit with a very large rock he found. It is flat on the bottom and I feel ok about it. They really like it, and it gets them up closer to their lights. We also bought them a small "desktop tranquility fountain". I really like it. and it fits right in, it is water pouring from and into a series of broken Indian pots. They are drinking from it a lot more than I ever saw them drink from the bowl. It is kind of funny, almost like a person used a drinking fountain. How is your egg?

oh the egg, well it is not moldy so i have hope in that. however it has not hatched either, nor has it shown any signs of hatching. but it did cool off here in san diego and i did not even think about it effecting the temps so it was at 80-81 for at least a week which may have slowed the hatch time. today is day 54. i am becoming very impatient ha ha

and I think he will do about anything if the price is right *winks* But seriously, I am a lucky girl, he is a contractor and can fix or build anything. He just installed a pellet stove and I am hoping I can keep the place warmer now! He is also going to start raising crickets for me in his shop using the aquarium the lizards used to live in. I hope this works; I am going through at least 125 crickets a week since the babies joined us. I can't believe how much they eat! Hermes is almost the size Fawn was when we got her, and she was a yearling.

Geesh I have not used 125 crickets for years LOL I use more like 3000 a month plus 1500 supers a month. And about 10 bowls of salad a day for the salad eaters.

I have been breeding crickets for awhile, it is easy, especailly in warm weather the adults lay eggs all the time. But as the colder weather starts you have to make sure the crickets that are breeding are kept in the 80's or they will not lay. Then you have to heat incubate the eggs they lay also, to get them to hatch.

Also a major thing, only the older ones breed, the ones with wings, Adults ! When ya hear them singing they are old enough.

I have to take the time to become more expert at breeding superworms, usually get to the beetle stage and they eat and live comfortably and then die leaving me no eggs :0( so more time needed. Soon , got enough right now to do!

Good luck with the crickets, its not difficult just be disciplined as far as giving them new laying containers every few days keeping the soil damp, and heating, feeding well.

Thanks for the info, Eve. I just got back from dumpster diving at the local coffee shop for their egg crates. Hopefully next time someone will see me and toss me some spare change.......
I didn't realize they needed soil, mush less damp soil. I thought they would just live in the egg cartons. I have chicken feed for them, and read somewhere to provide potato slices for moisture. Is that reasonable? How do you incubate cricket eggs?

need old egg crates to sleep on, will take money also ! LOL

Yeah the crickets do need egg crates to hide in, they are canibals and eat each other But in order for breeding, the adults need a shallow container of damp soil, about 2-3 inches the females will go in there and lay eggs in the soil. The eggs will be under there and grow, they will look like small pieces of rice. Must be heated.

Heres a pretty easy site to learn about it Valerie.

You can also do a cricket breeding search and pick who's you would like to follow. I like the most simple, as I have many other things to do , besides breeding buggies. heheheheh !

I am not sure how well this works, but my cricket pinheads are in a separate container with the soil they were born in and dog food sporadically placed. Also included a couple pieces of egg carton and I mist them everyday, once I forgot and lost some I feel like it takes them forever to grow but I know they are a little bigger than they were first born (looked like fleas).
