Vitamin A

lblrleltltl Nov 05, 2004 11:26 AM

I was wondering if anyone knows how much vitamin A is too much for uros.
I've recently read where excess vitamin A causes bone loss in animals and the reason for my question is I'm wondering if maybe I should not be using arugula(24 IU/g), mustard greens(53 IU/g), turnip greens(76 IU/g), and dandelion greens(140 IU/G) in combination...? Or is this amount not high enough to be concerned?
I don't use these exclusively, I also feed papaya, endive, escarole, and sometimes butternut squash(78 IU/g). I use a different combination of the above every couple of weeks or so for variety and my main concern is the Cal:Phos ratio but I am starting to now look at other vitamin and mineral ratios also.

I don't have any knowledgable advice to give, as I'm not a nutritionist or a vet. But just like with people, there's no perfect food. Variety is the key to an overall healthy diet. Every food has its flaw, but if you mix it up enough, the uros should get what they need without getting too much of the problems.

Hopefully someone else can give you specific information on how much is too much, or suggest other options to add into the mix.

I am not sure on the Vit. A front... I do know that those greens minus the arugula are generally quoted as the best ones to feed, and I am just not familiar with arugula, it may be in that group too.

I am interested to see if anyone has any ideas on the Vit. A front... Isn't that and Vit. D two vitamins that aid calcium absorption?

It sounds like your Uro is getting a great diet, I wish I knew more about the specific nutritional requirements for the Uros.
