Help with injured wild eastern king

grinning Nov 05, 2004 03:56 PM

A co-worker called me today about a baby kingsnake that she found. It was caught up in wire mesh, and has been there a long time from the looks of it.

About half-way down its body there is a crushed area, and below that point it is very dehydrated and looks like a dead snake. Above the crushed area he looks like a healthy, if rather underfed snake. I am going to give it a good soaking as soon as I get home, and will take some pics then. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help this poor snake the best?

Thanks,
Jacob

Hard to say post some pics when you can. It may be to far gone from the sound of it though ???

I am not sure if much can be done other than keep it warm, secure, offer good food and water, and hope it recovers. Snakes can be surprisingly ressiliant but it may have internal damage. A disruption of circulation may have also caused a dangerous lactic acid build up causing complications. Time will tell and please keep us posted.

Just to update, it seems to be moving around well, including the part of the body below the injury. My camera isn't good enough to show the injury, so I will have to find another one to take the pic. I will let it drink and relax until thursday, when I feed my other snakes. At that time I will try giving it a pinky mouse. I will keep everyone posted...

The snake is still alive, and seems to be doing well. It no longer looks dead below the injured area. Now it just looks like an underfed snake with an injury. It is very active and moves around the cage fine. I will try feeding it within the next couple of days.

He ate two pinkies tonight. He was unable to move them past the injured spot, so I will have to wait and see if he can digest them.
