1st Brumation

caraae Nov 05, 2004 06:20 PM

My beardie is about 6 months old and is starting to act like he's brumating. Is that normal at this age?
Obviously he's eating less, so it makes sense that he only poops every other or every two days now, right?
I spray him 3-4 times a day and sometimes soak him in a bowl of water. Should I cut back on this during brumation?
Thanks!

6 months is rather young for brumation. I would double check my temperatures, make sure the basking spot is getting high enough (around 100F) and the lights are staying on long enough. I would also bring a fecal to the vet to make sure he isn't having problems with parasites.

My bearded dragon was about 10 months when she decided to brumate but I made sure it wasn't anything else. I beleive it was caused more with the fact my appartment was cooler than it had been with the onset of winter. The place I was in didn't have very good insulation and I couldn't afford to have the heat on full blast to fight against the drafts. She slept fine through the winter though.

You dont really need to brumate a dragon that is that young. Bearded Dragons experience a growth spurt from a few weeks of age till around 6 months. it may be because his growth spurt has ended. also since it is now winter your house is probably colder. Re-check the temperature of his basking spot to make sure it is between 100 and 110 degrees farenheit. lower temperatures may slow the dragon down a little bit.
