Excessive water soaking.......

RaffertyReptiles Nov 05, 2004 06:36 PM

I've have a ball python which i've had for close to 4 months. I bought him as a juvenile and he is doing pretty swell for the most part, hes never missed a meal or anything. He got mites about a month ago and i took him to the vet and the vet told me just to get rid of the stuff in the cage, cook the wood if i wanted to save it and wash everything else. He gave me some mite killer stuff to mix with water and wash down the cage with everyday for two weeks. So i did that and killed most of the mites and i cooked the wood and washed everything but when i put the old cage stuff back in the mites came back. So i took it out again and cleaned everything out and put the snake into some water to try and get some off. So now the snake is back in the cage with paper towels as substrate and tupperwear for hide spots and there don't appear to be any mites or tics on him and hes still eating great but hes beeb soaking himself in the water dish alot. Hes in there like 70 percent of the time like during the day sometimes and even at night and in the mornings is this a sign that he still has the mites and tics and hes trying to get them off or does this just not mean anything? sorry for this being so long.

Sounds like he still has mites. I would throw away anything that was in his cage when he had mites. You might want to get some provent a mite and just follow the directions. Good luck

Sometimes these little buggers just prefer there water bowl to any other hide, maybe because of the tight fit or whatever the reason may be.

I had a snake doing this, so I removed the hide box replaced it with the same EXACT water bowl, obviously keep the 2nd water bowl empty, the snake used the empty water bowl as a hide and was happier then a piggy in poopy, and so was I since he was no longer soaking in water.
