Sick Uro

Aeromeggy Nov 06, 2004 08:47 AM

A couple months ago my fiance purchased a male and female mali. They were housed together at the place he got them, and we kept them together. The female has thrived, but the male became more and more lethargic. This past week we put him in his own tank and took him to the vet. Prior to the vet visit we treated him with Panacur and gave him a couple baths, which perked him up for a bit but didn't last. We had also been force feeding him Repti-Aid. The vet gave us fluids to inject, as well as some Batryl and Flagyl. She also said to add protein to his diet, but everything I have read says that protein in a sick uro can lead to other problems. Is this correct?

I don't know what else to do, but I hope this works. He's gained about 8 grams the past 3 days, so hopefully this stuff works. He is pretty much just pooping out the Repti-Aid.

Any other suggestions on what we can do? He is on paper towels with a basking spot of about 120 degrees. He has a UVB light as well.

I'd bump up his night time temps. In the cool side make sure it's 85 degrees Faren. You could also bump the basking temps if you'd like.

If he's gaining weight that is a good sign. Weight gain might mean that he's getting over whatever he has.

Remember change the paper towel everyday. Also clean out his old cage where the female is. I'm just saying that so in case whatever he has is contagious, then the female won't be sick. Green Peas are the best for weight gain I'm told. So try giving him some of those.

With dehyrdration, you could try pedialyte gatorade mix and also some gerber baby food like green peas.

I'm sorry your uro is sick. I hope he gets better and I hope this post helps.

i am sorry one of your babies is not feeling well!
those medicines sound about right if your uro had some parasites in him. i am by no means a vet, but from what i have read, panacur only kills certain parasites like roundworms but flagyl kills other parasites that panacur does not. did your uro have watery, stinky poos? if you have never had a fecal done on the girl, you may as well get her tested too so she does not get sick down the road.
as for the proteins, yes in excess they can be harmful to a uro, but i think what your vet was referring to was that most proteins help you gain weight faster. try the peas and if you have access to soy beans, you can try those also. (look for them in the vegetable section or in the frozen food section) i think the vet just wants him to bulk back up.
good luck and keep us posted

Poor little guy! Did they do a fecal exam at the vet?

If you're still force feeding him, mix a little bit of Bene-bac or Nutri-Bac into the stuff to boost the good bacteria in his gut. He won't be hungry if the good flora have all died off. When my Joe was so sick, I was feeding him a warm mix of Repti-aid, green pea baby food, and Bene-bac. With that and a vitamin/fluid injection, he started eating on his own and now he's a big, fat, healthy slob.

If he did show parasites in his fecal, you might want to have the female checked, just in case.

Good luck with him and keep us posted on his progress!

Thanks for all the advice.

A fecal was not done because we couldn't distiniguish his poop from the female's. He has pooped a couple times since he's had his own cage, but it's been pretty watery due to him not really eating much. It's mostly.

I will get the Nutri-Bac. Thanks.
