DK, here are my monitors basking spot temps

Ppk Jun 30, 2003 08:38 AM

Ok, the basking spot I have setup on the left side of his tank reaches 132 degrees! Now the one on the ride reaches about the same. So there. I guess in that case then the only problem I had was his diet which consisted of about 90 crickets a week. Now that I switched to feeding thawed mice every other day, would you expect to see a growth spurt?

Put your basking spots on one end of the cage not both ends, so the animal can escape the heat to. Try feeding mice crickets and feeder roaches. The animal will grow more if it eats more (common sense). If the animal is in its first year try feeding everyday, its normal to see spurts in monitor growth.

Okay. I have just started feeding thawed mice. I do plan to feed every day now instead of about 3-4 times a week. Both basking spots have hides, the one on the left is actually a habba hide which he basks on and that goes to 132 degrees. Underneath, his soil is nice and damp and is about 70-75 degrees. On the other side where the hot spot is about 120 degrees, underneath the logs there it is about 80. I measured temps all around and in the center, I have found my tank is actually 92 degrees rather than 88. Today I fed him 3 snails, I do feed roaches, I used to feed him only insects, now rodents too. I also see he is going to shed soon by the color of his skin and I measured him and he is just about a foot now w/his tail included. I'll post pictures soon.

Try allowing an end that is by the water that is about room temperature You see that they use it and choose to not being forced to be hot or higher temps all the time.
