baby day geckos paralysis

hpoulter Jun 30, 2003 08:46 AM

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on with my baby day geckos (Phelsuma grandis)? I have lost every one so far. They get to be a couple of inches long (maybe 4 weeks) and then start to show signs of paralysis. It starts in the back legs and eventually they become unable to move. I will see one lying on his back, and he can only twitch feebly when picked up. When they are in evident great distress, I euthanize them. Also in this state they can be attacked by even small crickets, which is horrible, so I move them to a cricket-free quarantine.

My latest theory is that it may be from botulinum spores in honey. I have been feeding them apricot baby food with mineral supplement and honey stirred in (which I have been feeding to the parents for more than a year), along with dusted flightless fruitflies and pinhead crickets. I have just discontinued the honey. has anyone heard of this?

I'm not familular with this species but are these hatchlings from adults you have or are you aquiring them from the same breeder. Just a thought, could it be a generic defect? good luck

I should have mentioned this in the original post, but the parents are almost certainly completely unrelated. I bought the male at a pet shop in Viringia, and got the female mailorder from Texas about a year later.

Have you bred and hatched out healthy babies with this pair before? one could be carry a bad gene if not.

Could this be metabolic bone disease?
