catawba or catalpa worms?

razyrsharpe Jun 30, 2003 09:05 AM

just wondering if anyone knows a commercial dealer of catalpa worms...they are a great source of bait for fishermen and i wanted to try them out on the turtle population i currently support. they are usually found in the south and feed exclusively on the leaves of the catalpa tree...hence their name. they are black w/ a single thick hairlike spike on their butt and have green or yellow stripes down both sides. also, they are not truly worms...but catepillars of the catalpa sphinx moth.

Hi, I had always heard that box turtles like catalpa worms, too, but experience with several three-toeds and a large catalpa tree have shown otherwise. The number one preferred live food on the "hoof" so to speak, for my turtles has always been garden slugs, with nightcrawlers a close second. I think they find the catalpa worms too tough to bite easily. Slugs are like parfait for them.
