JUST A CAGE QUESTION

jojay327 Nov 06, 2004 07:40 PM

HERES THE DEAL, I GOT A SIX YEAR OLD BURM THAT IS PUSHING 18 FEET, THIS MONSTER SHEDS EVERY TWO RABBITS. SHE IS IN A CUSTOM 10 FOOT X FOUR FOOT ENCLOSURE I BUILT THREE YEARS AGO. I WANT TO MOVE MY REPS TO ANOTHER ROOM AND THIS CAGE WON'T FIT IN IT. I HAVE A FEW SIX FOOT VISIONS THEY ARE THREE FOOT DEEP. I DON'T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT PUTTING HER IN THIS CAGE, BUT IN MY HEART I THINK IT WOULD BE OK. EVEN IN THE BIG CAGE SHE IS NOT MOVING AROUND ALOT, AND SHE IS OUT OFTEN. WHAT DO Y'ALL THINK. I AM NOT VERY GOOD WITH COMPUTERS AND CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO POST PICS HOWEVER IF SOMEONE WANTS TO GIVE ME THERE E-MAIL I CAN SEND YOU A PIC AND YOU CAN POST IT FOR ME. I NEVER POST BUT I READ THEM ALL. I KEEP FOUR BURMS, ONE ARGENTINE BOA, A FOUR FOOT SPEC. CAIMAN, TWO GABOONS, TWO WESTERNS, TWO EASTERNS AND A BUNCH OF FROGS AND SCORPIONS. THANKS FOR ANY ADVISE I MAY GET. JASON

I'm not so sure an 18ft Burm in a 6ft cage can thermo regulate enough. Were talking a lot of snake with not a lot of room to move from one end to another.
I try as best as I can to go by the rule of thumb that says...
the length of the cage should be at least half the length of the snake.
My burms are quite active. Even my 10 ft likes to climb.
I know I would'nt feel ok putting mine in a 6 ft vision
They are active enough, even with outside of cage time, that when I opened the door, they would more than likely spring right out.
Your 10ft cage wont fit in the room, or wont fit through the door?

I agree with you. the cage is to big for the room. I think I will have monster cages build me one. 8x4x4. give me your email and I will send you a pic of my big burm. thanks for the reply,

Thats a giant burm man, did you power feed him growing up? What do you feed him now? Great looking snake.

ITS A FEMALE, SIX YEARS OLD, NEVER POWER FED, HOWEVER SHE HAS ALWAYS EATEN RABBITS, NEVER RATS OR MICE. I RAISED HER SINCE SHR WAS IN A 20 GAL. I HAVE FOUR OTHERS, THEY ARE BIG BUT NEVER GREW LIKE HER. SHE STILL SHEDS AFTER EVERY TWO RABBITS AND SHE HAS NEVER HISSED OR BIT OR ANYTHING. I FEEL SO LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH SUCH A BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL. JASON

Personally, I think a 6' vision is too small for a burm of that size. I keep my 16 burms in cages that measure 12' x 4' and they use every square inch of the space I provide. One of the reasons I feel that my burms have done so well is that I give them space to move (and these same burms also get time out of their cage). I'd do what you can to see if you can build another large cage.
