Please help- Leo's arent eating

bizback67 Nov 06, 2004 10:17 PM

I have 4 leos. 3 baby albinos and a large carrot tail. None of them are eating anymore. They dont seem to be losing weight and they are still going to the bathroom. They all seem to be shedding and their eyes look good. Nothing seems to be wrong except they arent eating, or arent eating much. I have meal worms, wax worms, and crickets available. I did recently switch thier cages, how long does it take them to settle in? I remember when I first got the larger one he didnt eat for three weeks. The babies should eat tho. Any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone? Do they maybe eat less in the winter? we had our first frost this week so the weather is just now getting cold.

tell us what temps are being kept in your tank. That'll verify it.

It seems if you just moved them to a new home AND since the weather is changing it seems to be those 2 main factors. But let's be safe and ahve you post your cage temps.

Your leos will be okay as long as they don't look thin. You should try to keep them warm and offer them food as you normaly do...... I keep mine with a 90 degree hot spot at all times. Some of mine eat alot one day, and not as much on other days. Sometimes they don't eat for a week or more. Nothing to worry about unless they start loosing weight. Just be patient and give them some time. The only reason they would stop eating is if they had a disease or parasite........ so far you don't really have any evidence that would suggest either of those. Just be calm and patient.

another reason is because of the whole winter thing, geckos tend to slow down eating for the beginning of winter. It is like this every year on this page, about 10 people all ask why their geckos stopped eating, and it is mainly because of this. I highly doubt your geckos have any type of problem unless a cricket you fed them carried a disease, or you just got a new leo and you forgot to quarantine.

He said they didn't completely stop eating. Even if leopard geckos get colder they don't completely stop eating. In my personal experience, they completely stop eating if they have a parasite or disease.

From my observations of all the forums i go to for leopard geckos, mine dont do this because i keep the temperature the same all through the seasons and never had a problem yet. Every forum i go to, there are always 5-10 people saying their geckos stopped eating, and this is only during this time period. So far i've read 3-4 people on here already saying this, and their geckos havnt eaten for 4 weeks. Now do you really think that 20 different people's geckos each year get this symtom because of parasites and diseases? So what your telling me is that, the 40 different people i have heard say this, they were all stricken by the same things at the same exact time?

And yes they will completly stop eating because of the temperature variations.

They don't completely stop eating just because they are cooling down. If they stopped eating it would be because of a disease or parasite, geckos can go weeks without eating-but that doesn't mean they permanently stopped. When they get colder they slow their eating down and defecate less, they might eat 1 or 2 crickets or mealworms every week or every other week- But, they don't completely stop.

ok, so aside from decrease appetite is there any other change in behaviors? More sleeping?
I've had one of mine decrease in activity due to the colder weather but if there was food she would still wake up and go eat.

It may vary with each gecko. Since you did just change cages that may also be the problem. Try using a thermometer to accurately gauge the temps just to be sure.

Other than that, keep monitoring them, if they're going to the bathroom and they haven't lost weight then IMO its nothing too urgent.
